In 1978 John Stearns -a catcher (!!!) led his Mets in 1978 with 25 steals. How unusual is that ??????
That same year BIG Dave Parker -with the potential game tying run- crashed into Stearns with 2 outs in the 9th and Parker was not only out but wound up with a broken jaw.

Concepcion was the first shortstop to throw the ball on a hop to first base, he realized the ball got there faster by bouncing it off the artificial turf, eventually the play became common place, and yes, Larkin was a better all around player
wow you go way back to remember him. I don't remember him bouncing it but there were few games on TV back then.

i think it works probably with turf but not grass or dirt . All things being equal. What jeter did with the superman throw does not work at all . It shows a weak arm which jeter had.

The early 1960s New York Yankees were the first team that I ever followed. Hector Lopez was a prominent position player on the team.

Héctor López, a two-time World Series champion and the first Black manager in Triple-A history, has died at the age of 93. The New York Yankees, the team that López spent most of his career with, held a moment of silence to honor him before their game Friday against the Baltimore Orioles.
López appeared in parts of 12 big-league seasons, amassing a career .269/.330/.415 slash line that was good for a 103 OPS+. He homered 136 times and stole 16 bases, albeit at an inefficient clip. According to Baseball Reference's calculations, his contributions were worth an estimated 12.9 Wins Above Replacement.

Bruce Sutter was a HUGE name for a full decade.
Lucius Jackson was not as famous, but he was a major cog on the great Philadelphia 76ers teams in the mid 60s, that won a championship in 1966.
A lieutenant to Wilt Chamberlain on those teams.
I’m old enough to remember him, but just barely.

He was a member of the U.S. men’s basketball team that won the gold medal at the 1964 Olympic games in Tokyo, Japan. Jackson was drafted fourth overall in the 1964 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. As a power forward with the 76ers, he won the NBA championship in 1967 playing alongside Wilt Chamberlain. He played his entire career with the 76ers, was named an NBA all-star in 1965 and averaged almost 10 points and 9 rebounds per game, retiring in 1972. The rap/rock band Luscious Jackson named themselves after hearing an ESPN announcer mispronounce Lucious Jackson’s name.

I wonder if Sutter and Stearns died from glioblastoma. Both were just listed as cancer deaths. A number of pitchers and catchers from the 1970s have died from glioblastoma, due to radar guns. Quite a few cops got it as well. They finally changed radar guns.

A Cubs pitcher from the 60;s died earlier in the week, Dick Ellsworth. He has a career year in ‘63, finished 2nd to Koufax for CY Young.

Not sure about scouts. Just too small a sample size and not in public eye. Apparently radar guns have been changed so they aren’t as dangerous as they used to be. Most of the MLB brain cancer related deaths have been guys who played in 1970s and 1980s.
Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo is undergoing treatment in Atlanta for a brain tumor, the NBA announced Saturday.
Mutombo has been one of the NBA's global ambassadors for years, and recently appeared at Hall of Fame enshrinement events in Springfield, Massachusetts and a pair of preseason games in Saitama, Japan.
The 56-year-old Mutombo spent 18 seasons in the NBA, playing for Denver, Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, New York and the then-New Jersey Nets. The 7-foot-2 center out of Georgetown was an eight-time All-Star, four-time defensive player of the year, three-time All-NBA selection and went into the Hall of Fame in 2015 after averaging 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for his career.
