A rule the NFL needs to change

No real reason but just seems stupid. The Cardinals were setup 1st and goal on the Rams 1 with about 1:30 left in the quarter. After getting stuffed on first, it ended up being the last play of the quarter with two false starts on subsequent plays. I get the logistics of the rule resulting in the clock continuing to run but it just seems dumb for an extra minute to run off for no reason.

Here's a question I asked ComptrBob to investigate: In this age of high-scoring football where every play is designed to be an explosive play, should defensive teams ever allow an opponent to run a play on 1st-and-5?

If a defense jumps offside on 1st-and-5, why not jump offside again to make it 1st-and-10, provided the real estate is not critical.

If I were an offensive team, I might think about declining the second offside penalty.

Hmmm...

Same situation applies for 2nd-and-inches.

Why give a team a free shot at your defense, especially in this age where teams now finally realize fourth down is an opportunity, not a disadvantage.
