Breeders' Cup 2023

Post your thoughts here. One of the best days of the year. So much once and twice a year type money in the pools. I'm concentrating strictly on the Saturday races. Will post one opinion here now:

BC Turf Santa Anita race 8 (Saturday). I like Onesto here. This isn't the most consistant horse but his best is very good. I was reading about him and some of his bad races can be forgiven due to either physical issues or soft turf, which he does not like. He was a Grade 1 winner as a 3 YO last year, then was narrowly beaten by Luxembourg in the Irish Champions stakes. But that was enough to get him bet to 11/1 in the 2022 Arc de Triomphe but the soft turf didn't suit him and he finished 10th, beaten 9 lengths.

He opened 2023 in a tough spot; he is a 1 1/4 mile to 1 1/2 mile horse and his 2023 opener was against Inspiral in a Grade 1 at a mile over soft ground. Inspiral will be one of the favorites in the Mile on Saturday. Still, Onesto ran 4th, beaten 3 1/2 at 28/1. Following another disappointing race in Ireland, he went to the Arc last month dismissed at 55/1. He ran a giant race, finishing a strong 3rd, beaten a nose for 2nd, at 55/1 behind unbeaten Ace Impact. I watched a replay of that race and the horse put in a tremendous closing run.

This horse is a great example of how soft grass can effect results. Many football handicappers dismiss rain as a factor. That might be true on artificial surfaces but NOT on natural grass. Onesto ran in the last 2 Arcs:

2022 running; winning time of 2:35 3/5 at Longchamp
2023 running: winning time of 2:25 2/5 at Longchamp

The turf at Longchamp was labelled "good to soft" on Oct 1, but that is highly questionable. The fact the race was run TEN FULL seconds faster than the 2022 running leads me to believe it was really firm.

White Abarrio ran a Thorograph number of minus 6 in his last race. That's one of the fastest numbers ever recorded. I believe Flightline in last year's Breeders Cup, got a minus 8.
I see the Alex Bregman horse (No Nay Mets) ran 4th in the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint.

I caught the exacta in the Classic, and more than the money, I felt my Derby opinion was vindicated. I bet Derma Sotogake 6 months ago in the Derby and he had a troubled trip and wasn't a factor. The 2nd today behind the minus 6 TG/110 Beyer White Abarrio, if he ran that 6 months ago, he would've blown Mage off the track.

Cody Dorman dies on way back home after the big win.

RIP RIP RIP Cody what a story that was past couple years, something horse racing needed as well.

When they showed him in the winners circle on Saturday in the wheelchair, I don't think he was conscious.

Just watched the classic last night...didnt see one BC race up until then.

I bet Derma Sotogake in the Derby..sarurdays race likely would have won the Derby but he is not the same horse he was in May....hes a 3yo April foal ( I think)...hes had a lot of time to develop and mature from May until November

But to run that big off a 6 month layoff was impressive. I can't imagine a US horse coming into the BC Classic off a 6 month layoff.

In no way trying to poke holes in his BC effort.....just pointing out he very likely developed quite a bit since may.....you couldnt have gotten his BC effort from him back in may

not sure if your serious or not which is fine but he reached his had out to Nick Luck during the interview there. I think he felt the moment or Id like to think so.

Derma Sotogake was foaled on 4/28...only turned biologically 3 very close to Derby.

Classic winner ran a Thorograph negative 1...falling off 5 points from most recent race.

DS ran a 0.25....a 3.75 at Churchill and a 1.5 at MEY

I was being serious. When I heard he died the next day, I wasn't shocked. He looked comatose at Santa Anita.

White Abarrio's Woodward fig was so big it didn't matter that he bounced. I was surpised the other Japanese runner didn't show a little more. Looked like he was making a move on the far turn but he was clearly outfinished by Derma.
