Ridley bet over a five-day period last November while recovering from an illness.

The offense is not as egregious as it could have been.

But it's still a black eye for the league.

Wonder if Ridley bet while he was playing at Alabama?

Of course, Calvin Ridley cannot bet on NFL games, per the collective bargaining agreement.

Is Ridley allowed to make a legal wager on college football?

i heard he bet a total of $1,500. was betting parlays. Lost 11 million in salary. Hope he enjoyed his betting action. it was costly.

The NFL will use Ridley as both a precedent and a teaching moment.

Harsh punishment but the league's hands are tied.

I'd like to see some leniency here.

In this case, Ridley should be allowed to plead ignorance.

Make a positive example out of Ridley, not a negative one.

In the 2019 NFL season, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Josh Shaw was suspended 21 games for gambling on NFL games in Las Vegas.

Shaw was on injured reserve at the time and placed legal sports book wagers in Las Vegas, including a halftime wager AGAINST his own team.

The league threw the book at him.

Yikes!

Shaw went to the University of Florida in 2010 before transferring to USC in 2012.

He was a fourth-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015.

TYVM Morgan William!!!
To me Ridley's bigger "crime" is betting parlays of: 3, 5 and EIGHT teams

3...............I guess.

5................Why!?

8.................Who the "F" does he think he is? His odds of hitting an 8-teamer were about as good as him doing this and not being caught

A company called Genius Sports blew the whistle on Calvin Ridley.

The NFL hired the organization about 11 months ago to provide comprehensive integrity services to monitor betting.

Big Brother been watching us all for a very long time. George Orwell taught me that a very long time ago. The older i get i realize what a brilliant writer he was.

Just absolutely ridiculous. Especially hearing that it wasn't betting on or against his team on a single wager. Nor was it him betting on or against himself on props.

A couple of 8 team parlays? Really? He was basically playing the lotto with some pocket change just for zhitz-n-giggles.

How about this compromise:

Call it the "Calvin Ridley Rule" and issue a zero-tolerance policy moving forward.

Ban Ridley from competing for four games without pay, that comes to about a $2.5 million punishment, and send a message that the next player who makes the mistake of gambling on NFL games will face a one-year banishment with no chance for leniency.

Seems like Ridley is getting punished for the NFL's need/greed to profit from sports betting and the explosion in popularity the activity has experienced since the legalization era started in 2018.

I expect the gambling community to stand up for him, but why? Did the sportsbook turn him in? It’s in everyone’s best interest that these games are on the up and up, what he did is similar to insider trading. I’m sure there are others out there in the sports world betting. He made his choice, and it cost him a lot of money.

Raven rb Rice got two games for knocking the crap out of his wife in a elevator.

Ridley misses a whole season for gambling!?

Amazing how important the integrity of the game is now with these big book deals, human life, not so much 🤷

The first is a criminal case, so it is different.

Agree with LOUISVILLEKID.

And I begrudgingly disagree with FAIRWARNING whose opinion I respect.

Plus, this whole legal sports betting phenomenon is in its infant stages.

There's a big difference between innocently betting $1,500 on parlays while you're away from football and serving as an insider to a seven-figure betting coup while an active player.

There's no nuance in the penalty.
