I dont think it was a lie, but a difference in philosophy, since children almost never exhibit symptoms and seldom actually get sick, allowing schools to remain open is an important part of achieving herd immunity. A child potentially passing the disease to their parents should not be a game stopper either since most children have parents who are young and healthy.

Allowing schools to remain open and having the virus run it's natural course through the young, while still protecting the old and vulnerable, would rapidly achieve herd immunity with none of the economic consequences we're experiencing. This is what sweden has done, they did not close their elementary schools.
