Most jockeys are idiots
to get the younger fan base.I'm very out of touch here, what help does baseball need?
to get the younger fan base.
baseball is a very "boring" "slow action sport" that has a ton of dead time. micing up athletes to talk and offer their thoughts between pitches is going to make the game more interesting.
I'd love to be able to hear a starting pitcher talk to himself on how he wants to attack a hitter, or maybe a pitcher/catcher conference and what they want to do in this situation.
the reason we don't see "pickup games" anymore is due to too much organized baseball at younger and younger ages. They practice 2-3 a week then play tournaments on the weekend which could be 2-5 games. If they are not playing it as a kid, I don’t see many watching it as an adult. How many pickup games do you see? We used to have then every weeks. The kids are into soccer, hoops, and e-sports.
I do like what they did with Rizzo. It was a one at bat mic up situation. Could be something that happens early in the game. Then all the mics come off after the 5th inning.I wanna say "Yes" but it is one thing to do this in a MLBX or All-Star game where things are lot looser. Can't see this being done in September when Team A is fighting for a playoff spot and needs to focus on everything. I do agree with Sport on a Premium channel where anything can happen but not sure the players would be happy with that because the language used in dugouts is more NC-17 than G-rated.
The problem all comes back to the obsession with pitch velocity. The faster the pitches, the more strikeouts, walks and foul balls. Maybe a few more home runs but the 3 outcomes obsession has lengthened the games considerably over last 30 years.
Yeah such a limited situation it would work, no one will say much in regular season no matter how early it is.
This stuff would appeal to fans no doubt. Think of how popular $17m man Tony Romo is. He's known for precisely this, saying what the QB is probably thinking at the moment of the snap. He's getting paid so much I bet a new generation of analysts are going to be born thinking I can do that. It could get to be overkill though if every broadcast just becomes that.
