Did San Diego St potentially lose a #1 seed?

We know this much for sure. Utah St just burst an at-large bubble elsewhere as the MVC will get at least 2 teams. The Aggies were probably already in but their win over the Aztecs officially sealed it up thanks to 27 points from Sam Merrill.

Utah State hasn't won an NCAA tournament game since 2001.

Sam Merrill, who hit the game-winner against San Diego State, knew it.

Good theatre.

Merrill hit a 28-footer with 2.5 seconds left to break a 56-56 tie.

He was mad at the officials after the shot because he felt like he got fouled on the shot.

YIKES!

I forgot about that snub.

Last season, Utah State lost to ComptrBob's alma mater (Washington) in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Tonight's star, Sam Merrill, was held scoreless in the first half by UW's swarming defense.

Final score: Washington 78 Utah State 61.

I'll look to bet USU in the opening round this season, pending the match-up, of course.

After the loss to Washington last season, USU head coach Craig Smith called his team "a band of brothers."

Actually their 2 regular season losses were to Pacific, and their in-state rivals. They then lost to Northridge in the Big West and fell to Hawaii in the NIT.

They didn't really deserve a #1 seed. Kansas, Gonzaga, Baylor and ACC Tournament winner should be the #1's. No team from west of Mississippi River ever wins lately. If they went undefeated (to this point), maybe. They are an illusion created by their Record, Polls and ESPN. Knocked off by the 100th-ranked team in KenPom. FSU seems like a worthy dark horse, although being #1 seed is a curse for this 4th team.

Baylor dropped 3 of their last 5 and may have already played their way onto the 2 line. I think one of two top seeds could still be wide open going into conference tourney play, plus it would be tough not to seed the Aztecs at the top with one overall loss before today.

Interesting note on the 2003-04 Utah State team.

Losing in the Big West championship game was an obvious no-no.

Not a snub.

My bad.

They didn't lose in the Big West championship game. The Pacific team they split with went 17-1 in the conference, and tied with Utah State for first in The Big West.

Utah State was ranked in the Top 25 for 5 of the last 6 weeks of the season. Definitely was a snub.

No respect for the Big West in the 2003-04 season.

USU obviously got snubbed.

Pacific and Utah State finished with identical 17-1 conference records but Pacific captured the automatic bid to the Big Dance by winning the conference tournament.

Always tough when a team gathers on campus for a Selection Sunday rally and then the Selection Committee snubs them.

Interesting to note: After Utah State was snubbed by the Selection Committee in 2004, the Aggies won the conference tournament the following season to earn the automatic berth.

USU beat Pacific, 65-52, in the 2005 Big West championship game.

Pacific finished the regular season at 25-2 overall and 18-0 in conference play.

The year 2005 was the last year the Big West was a two-bid league.

Just to add a few tidbits about 2004:

65 teams made the tourney. Some at-large teams that year chosen over Utah St @ 25-3 were Alabama, 17-12; Richmond 20-12, Dayton 19-9, Texas Tech 23-11, Wash 19-11; UAB 20-9.

Utah State had issues with RPI and SOS.

Unfortunately in 2004, the Selection Committee was "double counting" negative qualities of mid-majors they wanted to exclude.

RPI was always a garbage formula, later tweaked for road wins, and eventually abandoned.

SOS, of course, was weak being in the Big West , and even with the NIT loss to Hawaii, USU finished with a 47th Pomeroy rating. Don't have Sagarin 2004 ratings offhand, but definitely better than many at-large teams.

....................and knowing how pathetic it is now - the odds of this changing any time soon are almost NIL! By having all schools in CA the conference made itself irrelevant outside of CA, Ad not all that relevant IN CA, too

Peaked too early. Happens to teams every year. Last year I thought Tenn. Vols were best team in country mid January.

Not only was the RPI garbage but the formula was public.

The Missouri Valley Conference gamed the system in its favor before the powers-that-be discovered the obvious holes.

Sometimes the best team wins the NCAA tournament.

But usually it's the team playing best.

When a sport has a one-game "playoff series" the best team wins it far less than when a series is 3-of-5 or 4-of-7. One bad game and you are done whereas a series lasting at least 5 games almost always seems the best team win because 1 game doesn't end their season

The biggest question here at EOG for March madness is will Railbird 3-peat in Jammers bracket contest.

Flynn looks like a different player at SDSU than he did at WSU. More efficient offensive threat.
