if a team under achives or over acheives oppostie happens in basketball than football. if neutral its no factor.. been following this 30 yrs and its true, not 100% like morons will point out, but definiteley true.

I can see an underachieving football team causing a school's fan base to show more interest in the basketball team in early November.

I also remember a time when the financial failures of a UNLV football team caused the UNLV basketball team to bus, not fly, to a game in San Diego.

Some football teams, like Duke and Michigan State, use basketball games to recruit football players.

And, of course, the athletic/academic culture is usually the same for a football or basketball player at a high-profile university.

you will also see a superbowl partcipants nba team lose home games on the day before. the lack of love from the student body can play a part.

Mich uses football games to recruit hoops players also. Really the atmosphere at Chrysler Arena isn’t very intimidating at all.

not sure, maybe a combo of energy and or spending by the athletic department
I think the spending by the athletic dept is a major factor. Look at Illinois, they were constantly paying off ex-football coaches while the hoops team was holding their own.
