Gonzaga Basketball

Steamrolling teams right now. Took down # 16 Virginia by 23 points today. They've also defeated the #3, 6, and 11 ranked teams in the country and easily have the best NCAA resume to date. I've always been skeptical of the Zags since they padded their way into the tourney by playing in a soft WCC. This team looks different. Scary to see some of the pointspreads that will be posted once they enter conference play.

Safe to assume we will start to see some "Gonzaga to go undefeated" props.

The Zags are likely to be double-digit favorites in every WCC game this season.

However, an undefeated prop could be difficult to price if teams continue to schedule games on the fly.

The Gonzaga-Virginia game was made on short notice.

CBS was the driving force.

What will be hard for the Zags is they will rarely get challanged in the WCC. That makes it hard to turn it back on for the Tourney. Besides that, the spotlight and target will get bigger.

In the last 4 years, Gonzaga has only lost 3 conference games, 1 in each of 3 years. In the last 20 years, Gonzaga has 5 unbeaten conference seasons, 7 years with 1 loss, 3 years with 2 and 5 years with 3 losses.

Gonzaga's fan base travels to Las Vegas every year for the WCC Tournament.

I count 18 conference tournament championships.

Of course, the loyal following then suffers the letdown later in March.

The Zags were #1 seeds in the NCAA tournament in 2013, 2017, 2019 and more likely than not in 2021.

Already picked the Zags to cut down the nets in another thread...JK can confirm

Have them at 7-1
I really hope to see it happen but your biggest obstacle will be the NCAA

They will make sure the Zags have the toughest pairings possible and will have to overcome officiating

The NCAA wants no part of a mid major winning a Natty

I doubt this, Gonzaga is a good story for them. If they played a schedule of a couple ranked teams and then WCC I could see the NCAA saying prove it to us. What they have done so far is given them all the proof needed that they deserve the #1 overall seed.

CBS loves the Cinderella stories in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Starting with the Sweet 16, I sense CBS executives want the teams that bring eyeballs to the television screen.

Which teams?

Definitely not George Mason or Virginia Commonwealth.

Think about the teams that CBS slots in those stand-alone Saturday and Sunday time slots when the entire country is watching only one game.

Or the teams that play in the late game on Final Four Saturday.

Teams like Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and Kansas.

As WildBill wrote, I think the Zags are now considered a national brand, not a regional Cinderella.

The December game between Baylor and Gonzaga was canceled in 2020 due to a positive COVID-19 test in the Zags program.

At the time of the cancellation, both teams were 3-0 in the young season.

Where was the game scheduled to be played?

You guessed it, INDIANAPOLIS.

The more I think of it this team and this game bring back memories of the 91 UNLV team. They started out #1 and looked invincible because they didn't back down from anyone, they scheduled tough games that year and blew out solid teams. They had no challengers either in conference because they too finally had gotten a top of the nation recruiting class in after having some program and system success with good but not elite players. They never got a really challenging game all season and it didn't look like the final four would be any different. The main difference between the Zags this year and UNLV then in my mind is they were defending champs and just weren't as hungry as this Zags program is to get a much deserved title. The Rebels that day just never got in full gear and their crazy amoeba defense was a relative no show. They had no fear of Duke and never put them away because of it. The Zags were more respectful of UCLA because beating the Pac12 used to always be the yardstick for the program before it elevated itself above any Pac12 program.

I fully expect after surviving their first real potential loss they come out and overwhelm Baylor. They got the wake up call that they need to bring more for 40 minutes to the defensive end of the court and need to work to get more open looks and less reliant on trying to create points the hard way. Plus Timms being in foul trouble kept them from an easy edge they had, was way too risky for him to go hard with the charges they were calling.

In live time I didn't think Timme got there in time. Thought for sure UCLA was going to free throw line to seal it.

It was such a great game. Even the big man Riley was hitting outside shots. It goes down as one of the best college basketball games of all time to me. No doubt. If there were a full house of fans it would have made it even more intense.
