The Sahara has a great history--Louis Prima and Keely Smith rose to fame in the lounge for example--but has been on a long downhill slide. The place was already becoming a dump when I first started spending time in Las Vegas during the early 1980s. Obviously the economic downturn with Las Vegas being so hard hit didn't help things. Another major problem is that all of the growth is on the south end of the strip. That's something I completely called incorrectly as well--during the 80's I would have wagered that the growth of the strip would have been toward downtown. At the time once you got past the Hacienda there was the Vacation Village and then desert all the way to California. For someone that remembers this era the development south of the strip is mind boggling.

I've actually got an article on the drawing board about the history of the Sahara. With so many of the 'old school' casinos long gone it's somewhat surprising that they hung on this long.

The Sahara article mentioned in my previous post is 'in the can' and should appear on the front page of the site within the next 24 hours if not sooner. I'll put up a link once it's up ;-)

Blondie does good work--the article is already up ;-)

The article is posted on the front page...

Las Vegas: The End of the Line For The Sahara

Read and discuss....I'll add some more personal thoughts about the Sahara later today along with some other historical tidbits. I may be over by the Sahara this afternoon and if so I'll take some pictures of the carnage.
