Luka Doncic timeline of conditioning trouble
Doncic admits 'I'm not in my best shape' in 2020
With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the 2020-21 NBA season to start in late December, players' offseason routines were notably impacted.
As the Mavericks convened for training camp, Doncic was noticeably heavier than he was during the 2020 NBA Playoffs in the Orlando bubble. With Doncic's weight as a trending topic of discussion, he addressed criticisms while taking some accountability.
"I mean, people on Twitter say every stuff," Doncic
said. "But, it's true I'm not in my best shape. I will get there for sure. But, you know, I've never been a muscular guy, so what can I say?"
Doncic says 'I've got to do better' about being in shape in 2021
One year later, Doncic's weight was again the topic of discussion as the Mavericks played on TNT.
TNT analyst Reggie Miller
said, "This is the heaviest I’ve probably ever seen Luka look, right now," during the broadcast. Play-by-play announcer Kevin Harlan said "We’ve done a couple of these Mavs games, and when you’re around the team what you hear is he’s worn out; he’s exhausted... My eyes tell me he’s a little heavier.”
In response, Doncic said "I think that’s my thing. People are going to talk about it, yes or no. But I know I’ve got to do better. I had a long summer, and then I relax a little bit."
Doncic led Slovenia to the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and, after the tournament finished, claimed to have taken three weeks off from basketball. It was during that time that Doncic admits he may have relaxed too much, resulting in a slow ramp-up process during the 2021-22 season.
Mavericks ask Doncic to lower playing weight before 2023-24 season
While answering questions from a Mavericks mailbag during the 2023 offseason, The Athletic's Tim Cato
wrote that "Mavericks’ key figures have talked to Dončić about decreasing his preferred playing weight this summer."
Within the story, Cato explained that Doncic, who was 24 at the time, was entering a stage of his career (and life) that required more discipline to stay in shape. He also added that the concerns were mental as much as they were physical, also noting that Doncic seemingly gets out of shape quickly.
ESPN's Tim MacMahon, who first reported about the conditioning issues,
says that Dallas was "extremely frustrated" with Doncic's conditioning, adding that Doncic's "weight ballooned into the high 260s this season."
For perspective on his weight, Doncic was listed at 218 pounds when he entered the NBA and is currently
listed at 230 pounds on the Lakers roster. That Doncic's weight is reportedly 30-plus pounds above his listed weight leads many to believe Dallas' concerns were too much to ignore anymore, ultimately leading to the deal.
