Who is the lightest player in the modern era (1970 and beyond) to hit 40 home runs in a season? He is not a current player.

Jimmy Wynn?

Good guess. He was about 160 but topped out at 37 HRs.

Some great power hitters from the 60s and 70s who were listed at 180 or less: Aaron, Mays, Banks and Billy Williams. Now everyone is either roided up or added on 25 lbs of mass thru weights.

Another good guess but the recently deceased Morgan never hit 40 HRs in a season.

This guy played for Detroit, Boston and the Brewers, among others. Maybe another team or two but that's all I remember him playing for.

Jackson? Way too big at 200 and up. Think Reggie Smith also around 200.
I was trying to remember Jackson’s old baseball cards as he was pretty wiry, stole 30+ bases early in his career also.

Your last post eliminated my final guess - Garvey. I don’t think he hit 40 though.

I can't remember Garvey's weight. Maybe 185-190? He was a short 1B, but solid enough to play football at Michigan State.

One more hint: this player played late 70s thru mid/late 80s.

Bingo

6'2" 160 lbs. They called him the "Banana Man". He could generate a lot of torque with a vicious swing.

Funny story about Ogilvie-when I was a kid working at the golf course he used to regularly use our putting green and range in Tempe (post retirement) shocking how small he was although I’d say 6-2 is a very generous height

I asked him who the hardest throwing pitcher he ever faced. He said JR Richard in the all star game in dodger stadium. He said it was twi light with shadows and he couldn’t see the ball. Said he just wanted to strike out as quickly as possible to get out of there

Excellent question Valuist

I imagine he could hit a golf ball pretty far. Same with George Foster. Not big guys but incredible bat speed.

Reggie did it in 1969, missed it by a year. Here is his 1970 card -

I believe Reggie and Oglivie tied for the AL lead in HRs in 1980. But weight wise, even in his lighter days he was 197, per the card.

One classification lists players by their size when they enter the league. What a joke it is to see Sammy Sosa at 165 lbs when he was about 65 lbs heavier than that in his prime.
