The NFL’s complicated relationship with sports wagering is about to get more complicated.
The league office is looking for a V.P. of sports betting, reports Brad Allen of LegalSportsReport.com, via Sports Business Daily.
The job description, per the report, focuses on four primary duties: (1) continuing to protect the integrity of the game; (2) advancing the NFL’s brand and reputation; (3) driving fan engagement globally; and (4) growing the value of the NFL’s data and intellectual property.
That last part is a fancy way of saying “maximize the revenue” related to gambling. And there’s plenty of revenue to be maximized.
But it’s a delicate balance. As the league identifies strategies for raking in more cash, the league will need to be willing to spend more money in order to ensure that temptations associated with legalized gambling don’t and won’t hurt the game’s integrity. And for a league that has a reputation for reacting to embarrassing situations, the league needs to be much more proactive when it comes to the potential pitfalls of sports betting.
That will be the task of the V.P. of sports betting, and it would be wise for the league to consider hiring someone directly from the gambling industry, someone who knows the dark underbelly of wagering and who can keep it from hurting the league as it tries to capitalize on a potentially huge revenue stream.

One of the math guys from an NFL analytics department would be an excellent choice.

There are plenty of great analytical minds in the San Francisco 49ers organization.

I have a few friends who work at the NFL Network. I see them every so often. They make it very clear before we start talking they do not want ANY talk of gambling. Be it on the NFL, MLB, WNBA........whatever. They say they are not allowed to bet on anything so please don't bring it up.

This will be interesting starting in the 2020 NFL Season when the Raiders play home games. The officials will stay at a non gambling hotel and rest assured there will be a few extra NFL security personnel there to make sure no one gets close to the officials

All of these sports should thank their lucky stars people (Men) bet on their leagues and have for decades. Probably more than 35% who watch are betting, and are loyal. Betting (Liverpool one day at Palms) got me into Soccer. I am watching the XFL (only) because I have $11 on Dallas. Weird how the PC-ness of not talking about Sports Betting dissolved immediately when people in robes in DC declared it OK.

Everyone talking about Sports Betting now when we were all doing it when the wheel was invented.
And everyone in Las Vegas now a Raiders fan but they can't name 2 players and won't be able to afford the games.

We live in a lemming culture. Sports Betting has kept interest in all of these crappy and boring Sports afloat. They are all pretty boring without gambling, except Hockey and UFC and sometimes Boxing. Sports Gambling makes an event pop and the bettor hyper-concentrate. It's great. And there is also a high with betting when you put you action in. Pro (and College) owe like 50% of their Sports Attention through the years to us gamblers. Markets bear out their necessity and (most of) the Suits and Ties will never cop to its importance because of ego, or because they played the game. Eyeballs matter and betting always creates eyeballs. We know here.

I love that Universalist is betting on Handball and Bandy. This makes me smile. I am glad he explains Bandy. Such a great word.

That would be pretty hypocritical would it not? If I wanted to place a wager on the game and I'm doing a game at the Meadowlands, there's a book on the other side of the complex and of course I could just pull out my smartphone and bet in my room. A new casino is being built in the Philly sports complex, they will have the book online before they take a bet in the casino. The options are growing and of course these are just legal sports books, the ones who would actually reject bets from or related to officials if they knew who they were coming from.

The whole concept of Las Vegas being some difference maker for gambling is so stupid on the NFL's part. They just have to accept the risks much like any other business where corruption could happen.
