RIP Gale Sayers

Reunited with Brian Piccolo. A terrific player who, like many running backs, was compromised by injuries. He gave flash to an otherwise smash mouth Bears team. I remember a Saturday afternoon against (I think) the Rams. They’re still trying to tackle him.

I talked to him briefly at the South Point during a Monday Night football event they had in the showroom. Nicest
guy, he took a minute to talk to me and the wife after the game.

I heard the interview, tough to listen to. Old football players do not age well, probably got the dementia from all of the hits.

You can make a case of Sayers being the best running back ever during his five years playing....That’s how good he was....some here never saw him play...

Sayers possessed sprinter's speed yet he could cut on a dime.

The combination of speed and torque probably led to multiple knee injuries during his seven-year career.

Legendary Chicago Bears players Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers were selected with the third and fourth overall picks in the 1965 NFL Draft.

Interestingly, Sayers edged Butkus for NFL Rookie-of-the-Year honors in 1965.

I saw the very end, after the knee injuries. He was very active with the bears until the last 2-3 years when the dementia robbed his quality of life.

Gale Sayers' Kansas teams (he went to Kansas even though he was from Omaha, Nebraska) played Missouri (coached by College Football Hall-of-Fame coach Dan Devine) in 3 season finales and were winless, from 1962-1964, going 0-2-1.

1962 @ Missouri Missouri 3 Kansas 3
1963 @Kansas Missouri 9 Kansas 7
1964 @Missouri Missouri 34 Kansas 14

I couldn't find any game stats for Sayers.
