Ron "Skinny" Boyles appears on VSIN tonight and tells a story on how he became homeless after an NCAAB bad beat

Boyles is a gambler's gambler....he's experienced all the ups and downs betting in Vegas. Most of the guys on social media
only show the winning side. How many bettors have the sports book manager approach them after a bet is in wanting
to cancel said bet because the bettor had more information than the book?

So I listened to the VSIN segment replay with Skinny and Youmans where Skinny told his bad beat story.
I was also interested in the story of his modest accommodation at 6th and Carson downtown.
Here’s what the Internet said.
I’m presuming it was renamed John E. Carson hotel.
It was described by the Internet as a flophouse.
As skinny said, bathroom down the hall and TV was an extra $5/ week.
64 rooms; men only (You know it has to be classy when it rents to men only.)
Good times. Dick the Pick also sounds interesting.

Now the property is home to Carson Kitchen, a very stylish and sexy new upscale restaurant.

You do good research, all true.

Gotta love Ron Boyles.

He visited with me on the radio quite often in Las Vegas.

We also shared some competitive times on the basketball courts in Las Vegas.

My favorite exchange with Boyles came inside the radio booth at the Stardust when I asked him for a day in the life of a professional sports bettor.

(This was at a time before betting apps and the emergence of real-time sports betting data where real gamblers would walk from casino to casino shopping for the most favorable point spreads and looking for the highest limits.)

Boyles began by saying he usually started his rounds at the downtown sports books in Las Vegas.

I wanted a detailed account of his day so I innocently interrupted to ask, "Where do you park downtown?"

To which Boyles quickly responded, "What are you trying to do.....get me jumped?"

Ron recommended det tb over 49.5 on vsin

Winner

How does he stay "skinny" when all the winning he does would result in better food options

If his nickname was "raman" I'd understand

Hopefully he does more spots on vsin in the near future

They tend to call people back on quickly after winning days

Boyles got me on Duquesne on Saturday v. St Joe. He was right, better than the 7.5 they were getting.

Ron has learned a lot in the past 40 years…as well as all of us….I remember Skinny when he came to Las Vegas back in the early 80s…my best friend back then (Howie aka Flintsrone) introduced us…it’s remarkable how many gamblers I met back then….

I don't know how Ron feels about the new era of apps, I never used one in Vegas. It took away the Vegas feel if going in a book and betting. I was lucky, I lived around 4 different books.

There's nothing like walking in, hearing the slots, and servers asking if anyone wants drinks.

The Tracy McGrady game.
That was a Art Manteris special.
I still can't bet at station casinos 20 years later, what a joke.

As Paul Harvey R.I.P. used to say...."Now you know the rest of the story"..

Pro Bettor Banned from Station Casinos

28 November 2002

LAS VEGAS – As reported by the Las Vegas Review Journal: “A Henderson man who describes himself as a professional bettor said he has been barred from sports wagering at Stations Casinos properties after he refused a request to void a bet he had made on an NBA game.

“Ron Boyles, 43, said he bet $2,200 on the Miami Heat plus 8 1/2 points against the Orlando Magic on Sunday at Green Valley Ranch, placing the wager about 15 minutes before tip-off.

“Boyles said shortly after the game started, Green Valley Ranch sports book manager Kelly Downey asked him to void the bet after the casino learned that Magic stars Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill would not play.

“…Despite their absence, the Magic won 77-75, but didn't cover the spread.

“Boyles refused to void the bet and said Downey told him he would be barred from betting again in any Stations property by order of Art Manteris, the company's vice president of race and sports.

“…Boyles said he went to Boulder Station on Monday to cash several winning tickets and was told he wasn't welcome to bet there anymore. He said the same thing happened at Sunset Station.

“`If I was doing something shady or trying to screw them, I would have made the bet, taken my tickets and gotten out of there,’ Boyles said. `That's not what I did. I hung around the book to watch a couple of NFL games. I didn't know (McGrady was out) until Kelly Downey told me.’…”

An NBA game with a final score of 77-75?

That could be a halftime score today.

Orlando never had the number (-8.5) covered in that 2002 game against Miami.

Artie Manteris never had responsible help to backup his sports book managers…Stations were cheap bastards…just another example of punters being smarter and way ahead of the books

If Station's had you profiled as a sharp bettor they would only allow you to come in once a day.
Then William Hill came over in the mid 2000's and things got worse as far as being backed off.
Unfortunately, that is the norm with a lot of these national brand name books today.
NWA no winners allowed.

I had forgotten had low scoring NBA games were in the 1990's and early 2000's.
Most of the teams in the eastern conference played that way.
