After the fall of the Soviet Union, an official who visited the US as part of a government delegation was asked what most impressed him about America.
He didn't mention the wondrous New York skyline, the grand monuments in Washington, or America's beautiful mountains, lakes and rivers. No, the Soviet was astounded by....America's grocery stores. He could not believe the incredible goods available in such abundance. He was amazed at the diversity of shoppers and that the "common" people appeared to find what they needed at prices they could afford, while the more affluent shoppers also found what they wanted in the same store.
The grocery store is the showcase of the free enterprise system because it is built around the concept of millions of customers making their own decisions about what they buy. Suppliers and manufacturers selling to grocery stores must be creative and diligent studying their customer's needs, or they'll be left behind. Marketing depts regularly PAY CUSTOMERS in focus groups to find out how to improve their products and services. Competition ensures only the best manufacturers and retailers will survive.
The result of this freedom showcase is the best quality products at the lowest possible prices (grocery store profit margins are paper thin) where millions of individuals are able to make their own decisions about what to buy based on their means and value.
Now, socialists will argue that this business model is not 'fair'. Some people can buy steaks, while others can only avoid hamburgers. Some customers are poorly educated and will make bad dietary decisions. Much of the expense of advertising, executive salaries, promotion and packaging could be eliminated "reducing waste and costs."
Of course, in their blind zeal for 'equality' and 'fairness', these economic illiterates don't understand that hamburger is more available at lower prices because some people buy steaks. Most people can afford better diets for their families because so many businesses are competing to provide better products at lower prices. And, contrary to Marxist theory which isn't worth the paper it's written on, the increased volume that comes from effective ('wasteful') advertising actually
lowers the per unit prices of consumer goods.
The reason the Soviet official was so impressed with America's grocery stores was he came from a product of socialism -- a controlled system where the evil 'profit' motive was stripped...which resulted in limited selection and sky high prices. Heh, go figure. :doh1
The contrast between free enterprise and socialism is sharp and clear...well, at least to folks who have actually
lived under socialism.
A company like Apple would have NEVER emerged under a system where only governments, large organizations and PhDs were manufacturing and operation computers. And it took decades to move from a rotary dial phone to a push button back when communication was controlled by the government-regulated AT&T monopoly. Then the markets opened up and low and behold, now we have cell phones, digital cable, the internet, iPods, Blackberries...even the ghetto people in New Orleans can afford.
This is the model for success in America...hell, this
is America.
We don't need "government fixes" -- we need patriotic warriors who know how to sell FREEDOM!

Thanks to unprecedented levels of government spending, a baby born today will start out his life 6 figures in the hole -- and this isn't counting future devaluation of the USD and massive inflation just around the corner.

The entire corrupt 'progressive' system is going to implode, but these narcissistic hippy do-gooders don't/won't see it because they don't have any skin in the game, relatively speaking. Half the population doesn't even pay taxes. Oh sure, they may fill out a tax form and
think they pay taxes with the left hand, but then the right hand gets reimbursed through something called an income tax credit, not to mention every other govt service we can't afford.
The socialism shell game will continue until it collapses under all of us and by then it'll be too late.
