The United States should announce a July 4th celebration like none other.

Here's hoping we no longer will be under government guidance this summer.

A true Independence Day.

I usually go to a comped SB party, but this year I have nothing planned. Let me know where you'll be and a masked ComptrBob may show up. LOL

I'll contact my friend David Dineen to see if he would like to join the group.

To avoid breaking any government rules, please turn the party into a peaceful protest against sports books that gouge their customers with high vigorish and miserable future-book odds.

One other travel advisory: Do not meet at the State Capitol in Carson City.

:p

I'm sure the company is good but Reno in February is low on my desirability list. I was going to fly out to Vegas but canceled, better betting options here anyways

Still in Denver area. Was supposed to go back to Mexico Jan 3 but concerned about ease of getting back in for ad hoc work projects, so will stick here for awhile. Went out to Vegas few weeks ago, it was just sad how empty everything was. I'm sure SB will get some people out but I'm guessing it's still very quiet compared to normal. With all the sports betting allowed elsewhere I don't think Vegas will ever be what it used to be for "Big Game Weekend"

6 feet of snow at Tahoe since Monday. Only useful if you are a skier, boarder or snow bunny. :)

I lived in Reno for about 2 years Bob. Frankly I never liked it there, but the access to the mountains was nice and I did ski 3 or 4 times a season. Now that I'm in my 40s I never go skiing, go figure. I have been to all the famous places in Colorado, Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge, Steamboat...you name it. And yet never once skied at any of them, just spent time in the villages.

Yep, by itself, Reno is pretty mediocre.

I know every bump on every run at Squaw, but now I'm just a fair weather backcountry skier. I like Colorado skiing (who doesn't?), many years ago I skied Aspen, Vail, and Telluride on ski vacations. I had a buddy who did an internship at the Aspen Clinic, slept there at night on a hospital bed. LOL

Which one did you like the best? I obviously like Aspen but Leadville is a close 2nd. Vail is like a truckstop on the side of the highway. 90% of the people here are transplants and I would say 80% of those are from the east coast.

I agree. Vegas better hope California never legalizes sports gambling.

Love the idea! Unfortunately I can't make that, but let me know when you're in the Atlanta area and we'll meet for drinks or coffee. That goes for most others here.

You directed this to WildBill, but I'll throw in a comment. I liked Telluride more than Aspen. Aspen was super commercial even in the 70's, mostly skiing tourists swamped it every winter. Telluride in the 90's was like 25 years behind Aspen. Both originally mining towns. I almost bought a ski-in lot from a friend at Telluride, but I already had my place at Squaw Valley. Skiing at Aspen is more challenging (primarily the face of Bell Mtn plus Aspen Highlands) than Telluride, but both are great ski areas. Vail was a disappointment.

"Big Game" weekend - maybe.

But being what it was in the 80s/90s.......nope!

Some of my fondest memories involve spending all day Saturday & Sunday at the Stardust book watching/betting CFB/NFL games. In the late 80s I put $50 on a 5-teamer. Stupid - I know but I was stupid back then. I got 4 miracle covers and cashed it for about $1200ish and back then and being in my early 20s it was like $12M. I was hungry so I went "next door" to Slots-O-Fun and got a $.99 1/2 pound hot dog and I chalked up my parlay luck to the hot dog so the next day I got another one and had another winning day.

Forget the SB. The best was that first Thursday/Friday of the NCAA Tourney when games ran from 9A-9P. If you wanted to bet the 9A game you had to be in line by 8:30 or else you might not make it in time. Because there was no offshore the books were packed and you got to learn several new words after most plays.

Now..................forget it - those days are long over

I think "Big Game" weekend will still be big but it will be the NCAAs that won't

Hah, I was wondering what ski resort you enjoyed in Leadville! For visiting, I like Vail a lot. Can't say much for the slopes but the village is unique in North America, reminds me of Zermatt so much. Can't say anything about the skiing obviously, I'll leave it to you guys. Telluride is great for a summer visit, probably the best. Just that 6-7 hour drive that keeps me and probably millions of others from going out there more.

I certainly don't miss three things from that era:
1. Smoking everyone. Nothing worse than getting stuck in line behind a chain smoker.
2. The long lines to cash tickets after the SB. Felt even worse when you were getting some money back but were a net loser on the game.
3. Having to walk and drive all over town just to get a number. And then that sinking feeling when you saw the board and the number was worse than the last place you were at.

Three good things from that era:
1. Free parties, all you could eat or drink, and often some famous ex-player showing up. Some of those were just epic.
2. Public was not very sharp. You could make money betting the same props and win almost every year.
3. So many fadeable people were around, people weren't so quiet in the book with opinions like they are today. You could just sit or stand in the book and listen to clearly dumb opinions tell you how a team was the lock of the century. I remember one time while filling out a parlay card for my old man I could hear this guy go on about how no one knows more about Bay Area college basketball than me. He was like Game Bred going on and on about greatness, in this case coach Mike Montgomery. He was telling some guy to bet this three teamer and then buy him a drink later that night. I faded all three on a parlay and cashed, then went looking to buy him a drink but funny he wasn't around.

MGM just put up
KC -3.5 +100
TB +3.5 +100

both are low revenue books in the new states. .. they are looking for new people to deposit... Problem is with covid19 going on hard to play a side or and over now until day of the game.

Miss:

1: 100% agree. That was the worst
2: Or after an NCAA game
3: That is why the greatest thing ever was the Stardust and Riviera. You could run between the 2 in about 20-25 seconds and almost always get an extra 1/2 to 1 point in your favor at the other book. I also miss those huuuuuuuuuuuuge manually operated boards at the Stardust that had to have been maybe 15-20 feet high. To change a number the panel would open up and someone on a ladder would manually do it. For those who never saw this - no way to explain it

Good:

1: ..............and food for a giveaway price. 99-cent 1/2 pound hot dogs or shrimp cocktails
2: No argument
3: YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! Like you I would find a group of a handful-ish of guys in their 20s/30s. They would be talking about what games to bet on a Saturday morning. Never mind they were taking the worst of the line and did not know it. They would talk about taking "Team X" -6 not realizing it was -3 earlier in the week. Like you did always listen for the loudest mouth and fade his ass and it would cash at around an 80% rate. Or more. Especially when it involved "public teams" like Notre Dame, Ohio State and the like. ND might be laying 30 against "Creampuff U" and the loudmouth jackass would say how awful Creampuff U is and how great ND is and ND will beat them by 100 so lay the -30. Never mind the fact ND won a big game the last week and had another big game the next week so it was a massive flat spot - Jackass knew ND was a LOCK which meant Creampuff U was the lock to bet and sure enough ND would win by 21-ish and never come close to covering. I do miss those days

If someone is in Europe for a vacation, Zermatt is well worth a side trip. Set near the base of the Matterhorn, the village is really amazing. No cars are allowed, there is a giant parking lot, 10 miles from town and you take the railway up to town. Ski long sweeping runs from the Klein Matterhorn tram down to town and you can ski into Cervinia, Italy for a pizza lunch. Easy summit of the Breithorn (13,661') for those inclined to mountain climbing. Ski mountaineers can toddle over to Saas Fee (another cool village) via the Alder Pass, while stopping to have a beer at the Brittannia hut.

I've done all of the above.

I worked in Geneva for a year about 10 years ago. I've "skied" in Chamonix, France. I was terrible and spent the rest of the winter trying to get lessons in the Jura area, but the weather turned mild and my schedule never cooperated again. And of course, this winter is out for me.

I have also skied in switzerland and austria with my brother when I was young nothing like sking from the top all the way thru the streets to the hotel. The food was also wunderbar!

That’s one of the few sports I have never attempted...and I hear the nightlife in ski resorts are tremendous....I am envious of those that have gone to ski resorts....

1992 Winter Olympics. I worked for CBS and they said if I flew to Geneva they would transport me to Albertville so I flew there. I recall going thru customs with the Red and Green options. Once in Albertville I stayed at Valmorel ski lodge. My credential gave me FREE skiing the entire time there. I never used it once. You have no idea how many people were livid at me for having this option and not using it. I do recall the place was fabulous but I worked Midnight-9A and when done I grabbed a few hours of sleep and attended as many events as I could since I got free tickets to all of them or used my credential to sneak into those I did not.
