The good ole Al Michaels' jinx

The opening odds start here
"On comes Justin Tucker, who almost never misses".

Where's Tirico when you really need him?

I thought NBC missed the story completely when previewing the Ravens-Bills contest.

If they were on their game, NBC would have focused on the swirling winds at Bills Stadium and the solid defensive units of both squads before the game started.

A check of the over/under on the game (49.5, about league average) and the howling winds would have told the NBC crew to expect a strategic low-scoring battle.

Instead, they took the easy route and the one that might attract the most viewers by focusing on the quarterback showdown between Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.

Studio hosts Mike Tirico, Tony Dungy and Chris Simms talked endlessly about the two quarterbacks and nearly ignored the defensive players on both teams.

Simms goofed when extolling the virtues of Josh Allen ad nauseum and then picking the Baltimore Ravens to win the game.

Why did NBC blow the preview?

Laziness and a lack of imagination.

What's more, offense sells tickets and also draws eyeballs to the television screen.

Michele Tafoya should have alerted viewers of the windy on-field conditions during pregame warmups.

Cris Collinsworth should have shed light on the difficulty of catching a ball in windy conditions at Bills Stadium BEFORE the game and not as a sidenote in the fourth quarter.

And Al Michaels could have kept viewers abreast of the in-game total to highlight how the wind was affecting the game.

Even the brilliant placekicker Justin Tucker struggled with the outdoor elements.

The game had no rhythm to it and the herky-jerky flow caught NBC completely by surprise.

I don’t think I have ever seen a kicker hit the left upright and then right upright in back to back kicks

Bears Cody Parker hit the uprights 4 times in 1 game vs Lions in 2018

That's a record that will stand for a long time, if anyone counts that statistic.

Of course, everything seems to be recorded and analyzed these days.

Cody Parkey infamously ended his Bears career with a "double-doink" (upright to crossbar) at the end of a playoff game against the Eagles in the 2018 NFL postseason.

NBC commentatpr Cris Collinsworth gets credit by some for coining the phrase "double-doink."

But Chris Berman used the term in 2000 and John Madden often said "Doink" when a field-goal attempt hit the uprights.

Little-known fact: the 43-yard field-goal miss by Parkey was tipped at the line of scrimmage ever so slightly.

Harrison Butker has missed a field goal and an extra-point through three quarters of today's game against the Browns.
