The Rise and Fall of BetOnSports Book Preview

The Rise and Fall of BetOnSports Book Preview

August 16, 2007

The 134 page novel "The Rise and Fall of BetOnSports" is to be released later this week. This book was written from an inside view of the goings on at BetOnSports as well as various other aspects of the offshore gambling industry. EOG has received an advanced copy and has printed an excerpt for you to preview below.

From Chapter 5 - Office Wars, the Terrorist Strikes Back, and the Return of the Gambler (The 2001 BetOnSports.com Football Season)

Pete than began taking me on a tour of the renovations done at NASA since my last visit. They had erected a state of the art ninth floor playground with a full bar, casino tables, restaurants, gym, VIP guest rooms, and covered pool and sun deck on the top floor. None of this was for employees and I chose to work out in the public gym on the 4th floor of the mall which had superior equipment. I am not sure but this might have been an innovative move by the "G". The pool, bar, and casino were beautiful. The VIP rooms were unfinished and so were the restaurants. Originally this elaborate facility was meant for big bettors but eventually the brain trust started thinking and realized that media giants such as Jim Rome who was bringing in more new customers than any single source of media was the type of guy they needed to schmooze in Costa Rica.

After meeting with Pete he took me to some new offices on the 9th floor that included the recently arrested puppet CEO David Caruthers and "G's" sister Laura Beth was now using his office on the ninth floor. I met David that past spring and he really seemed not too impressive. He was very reserved and quiet but did smile. For the most part he was holed up in a corner office as the CEO but when it came down to decisions I never ever dealt with him it was always "G". When I would be having a meeting in the VIP room there might be a time when "G" would dismiss David for our private marketing/advertising conversations and there were also times when "G" told David to wait outside until he was finished with his meetings. As a CEO it had to frustrate David to have no real authority but he was a well paid puppet who earned his money since spending the past year under house arrest in St. Louis awaiting the betonsports.com trial. I really never did speak with David a whole lot even though we lived in the same condominium building he was rather awkward and never good about responding to a basic hello or good morning outside the office. His desire to get from out of the shadows of "G" probably in my opinion led to his vociferous ways with US politicians (A BIG NO! NO! Can't you understand the big red stop sign?) And his eventual doom in St. Louis.

Laura Beth on the other hand was really a waste of air. She didn't do anything of any importance although I am sure she played more sports than either of her brothers as she was definitely on the masculine side. I wouldn't be surprised if she pissed while standing up. She even had the gall to say to me one time, "What you're doing is nothing special it's all G's money". She might have been masculine but the envious streak was without a doubt her feminine side coming out. She would also get herself arrested currently and also as part of the online pharmacy scheme where she would have prescriptions forged so product could go out that much quicker. Again greed at work, you can make a lot of money when you can spend money to advertise an online pharmacy. Why screw it up by doing something illegal? Also you could make a lot of money in running an online gaming company. Why screw it up by doing so many illegal things where the list goes on and on of which I am sure the 22 counts that "G" faces in the St. Louis courts his all-world attorneys will have a tough time explaining more than a few of them.

Down in the VIP lounge this time around "G" was all smiles and gave me a big, friendly, warm handshake saying "good to see you Hacksaw!" I was more than surprised. My first thoughts were that he was just stand offish to people that he did not know for less than a year and by now we had frequent meetings. The reality probably was I was delivering a big time ad campaign at a fraction of the cost to him. Little did I know that after a future dictatorial one sided negotiation my fraction would be substantially smaller than the $350,000 plus I expected to earn for a year's worth of hard work along with paying my own expenses including air fares, taxis, etc. in travel to and from Costa Rica.

One of the issues I pressed "G" with was re-branding the company from NASA Sports Book International to Betonsports.com. Why not? We already owned the URL. "G" hated this idea the day I presented it, blasting me that the name of the company was NASA Sports Book International and it was to be used in all radio ad copy just like it was used in print. One day later in the 8th floor VIP room "G" announced that all ad copy for creative starting with radio from here on out would be branded as betonsports.com and NASA would be phased out. I never was one to worry about who gets credit for what but I wanted to ask "G" if he remembered our conversation less than 24 hours ago? This was a small victory that would be overshadowed by a series of ugly events over the next two weeks.

EOG.com is offering a discounted price for the entire book, available for purchase HERE.

Hello Slew, some of the characters are fabricated but it is based on actual events. There are two stories in there that are fabricated but the author notes that it is fabricated, and nothing that would be incriminating towards anyone, just good hearted laughs.

Currently it is in an ebook form which is 8 1/2" by 11" rather than the standard novel size of 6"x9" so that would translate to approximately 35-40% more. There have been some good reviews and there have also been some negative reviews. I also realize I will be criticized and anyone that spends money to buy the book has the right to criticize the author. I realized real quick once your name is out there you are fair game.

Hope you enjoyed the preview!

Thanks for posting, Hacksaw. I think it will be a great read.

Does the book talk about any of the BoS sister books and experiences with those?

Re: The Rise and Fall of BetOnSports Book Preview

who wrote this book?

Phillies, Hacksaw Hemingway wrote the book! That would be me. Obviously it is a pen name. This is my third time publishing in print and first novel. I cannot emphasize how difficult it is to write a novel. I started writing the novel 6 months ago. The past two months have been the most difficult with editing.

The ebook is based on actual events through "my eyes" unless otherwise indicated. There are some actual names of high powered US executives in the book that were a part of the rise of BetOnSports prior to the decision to enforce laws on gaming advertising.

I will say that if I were to be in a group of potential jurors to judge any of the characters in the book I would be thrown off the jury because you will find out that dealing so closely with the organization that I have my views due to what was a very exciting experience that turned sour. I believe I might be in the majority also but that is my perception. You will make up your own minds.

I hope you read the book, it has a lot to do with the lifestyle of online gaming during the pioneer days at the early part of the century. The book is for entertainment purposes only. There have been a few positive reviews so far, one bad and a threat. I hope you enjoy preview and appreciate anyone that spends there hard earned money to read the book.

Is there any BOS $$$ left for all the people that are still waiting or do they have no chance of being paid?

Hacksaw,

Welcome to EOG and congrats on finally completing your book about BeonSports!

Guys,

I can't begin to tell you how much you will enjoy reading this book. When someone's life is threatened because of its upcoming release, how bad can that be?

Seriously, I have known G for many years and I am quite familar with how he operated...

Reading about this topic is worth every penny and then some whether you were around this industry back then or not....

As I've heard it said , "more will be revealed.." :+waving-5

I played at BoS and Millenium occasionally... I always kept a few Hundred there most times from 2005 til they closed shop. Not a Major player there but I ran Many Many Contests with Fred over there and he was always great to deal with. Never had trouble with getting winnings updated or complaints from the players who won those contests. Was I pissed at how things went down...Yes... our posters got stuck out of no telling how much and us out of 10K in prize money, but what are you to do... But Until DOJ got Carruthers then all was smooth as silk as they had Foots, baskets, and bases Contests

Young Rusty Griswold thank you very much and how are you today. As for money left for people to be paid I seriously doubt it. They owe a lot of people a lot of money from what I hear and what I know. BOS in my opinion should be likened to the 1985 Chicago Bears. All the talent in the world that made it run but after a short lived rise to the top greed destroyed it. In the book I do state that I believe had it taken certain measures it would have been a fine leader in an industry that would be accepted today by the US government. That was my idealistic view. Other people had other views that included massive fortunes, being the best, and status quo.

For my part which included an advertising strategy that stood the test of time two years after my departure, I am sorry that any single person out there was the victim of theft. I was a firm believer in customer respect because none of these companies is in business without customers like yourself.

Thanks Shrink. As for the character in the book "G", I doubt any of the threats would come from him. He was a hard businessman, cutthroat to say the least. In my opinion his followers were guys that want to prove themselves if you know what I mean and represented the company and the owner of the company poorly. That is the price to pay as an owner, you are responsible for the actions of your company.

I am now understanding the professionalism of a writer that must do it day in and day out. You cannot please everyone, You try to be impartial but opinions are the heart of controversy.

Dirty, it's really too bad that the company took the dive. My personal opinion is that when a company goes public the demand of the shareholders is so great that cutting losses was the option for shareholders with no concern for the invested customers like yourself. I consulted for a public company last year and there was too much worrying about shareholders and not enough concern about what makes business. Customers.

I don't think a public traded company can be as successful with the demand of the shareholders because gambling since the inception of time is about long term. You can beat the house for a little while but in the long run they win and that is why they are in business. Public traded companies focus too much on daily movement.

Hello Dirty and Hello Reload. Thanks for welcoming me aboard. Yes it does talk about some of the sister books as I was involved with them. May I ask did either one of you play with the sportsbooks?

I was a big customer of mvpbets.com back in the 2000-2003 years. It was my first sportsbook and I remember signing up because I they were one of the few sportsbooks that sent a cool sports pager. I started out as a small bettor but grew to be such a huge player a year later that they had to lower my limits. Back in 2002, I even visited their offices in the San Pedro Mall during two trips to Costa Rica and had a good relationship there despite being a pretty big winner.

But once 2004 hit, I felt a lot changed for mvpbets and I pulled out everything I had. Duane Roberts seemed to be gone at that point and it was run like the rest of the BoS books that had bad service and poor decision making. I was upset at how my final payout request was handled and how they made me pay a 3% fee because "I was asking for the whole balance". And they made me still wait a week for the funds even after agreeing to it.

Looking forward to having you here on EOG, Hacksaw. And I am sure this book of yours will be very interesting.

sl55, If it was only a few hundred I never would have bothered to write the book. My losses had a few more zeros at the end and I would eventually go out of business and work for someone else.

As for the book there are no excuses. Also my time at BOS ended officially in the spring of 2002. I got some calls thereafter when some problems arose that I was very good at solving but my finances were never resolved so I never returned, despite wanting to because I really enjoyed the challenges of breaking ground for a new industry with major media companies that is detailed in the book.

If you lost funds, we are in the same boat.

Reload, I heard a lot of good things about MVP Bets. I am not sure but there was another MVP in the Mall San Pedro on the 6th floor. They seemed to try to disassociate as much as possible with BOS.

I want to say this now because you all are knowledgeable sports bettors and have been around. In the book I do speak highly of one sports book who's owner is a current advisor for another sports book. I don't want the book to be about an endorsement for anyone! Do your homework if you play online but I did think highly of one professional and his team because they were honest and responsible in their actions despite dictations from above to do different. The reason I put a link of theirs in the book is because they are given good press and if they are offering money for referrals than referral funds that come from this book are being given 100% to charity. As a matter of fact I am in the process of sending a letter to the State Attorney General to get approval on this and if it is not acceptable to them than I will remove the link in the ebook.

They dragged me out for 9 months before giving me about $.07 on the dollar which basically paid for my expenses of travelling to and from Costa Rica, and travel around the US, parking tickets, etc. while representing them on business. It doesn't feel good and I carried it around me for years, its tough to let it go and I wished I could have moved on but it sucks!!! when someone screws you cause they know they can. How and why did you end up working for NASA/BETONSPORTS to begin with, WHO made the arrangements for you to be able to do this, and weren't you also working for some other prominent online gambling establishment at that same time?

sl55, I agree with you that the money was gone for some strange reason when they closed shop. I firmly believe it was an excuse to take care of shareholders while stiffing customers. There are a lot of answers I would like to know too. I do have my opinions based on the incompetence of certain people that included the CEO and the actions of others that were devious and unprofessional. Now there were a lot of brilliant people in the company also that did their jobs but too many of them departed a the fall was inevitable.

Not one single person can make a company successful. It took the efforts of a lot. I highlighted the sales office in the book. Those guys in my book never got enough credit for converting 40% of the customers.

I am biased towards others because I am sure you will agree when someone takes advantage of your trust you feel bewilderment and downright disgust for them as humans. But some of those professionals were excellent contributors for the company.

Hey Shrink,

I try to answer honestly and I also make note because I have to remind myself that I am biased because of the betrayal. I would be lying if I said "it didn't hurt".

As for working with NASA I joined an ad firm that was handling some of their business that was referred to from a US based land developer who invested in Costa Rica. The owner of the firm thought NASA was a waste of time and he turned out to be correct. I should have listened to my mentor but I was the fool that bit. I impressed NASA with my persistence with the media. Media that they had no shot of working with based on their lack of connections. The following year they called me. The rest is history.

At the time I was an independent advertising agency. NASA knew that I handled other clients in the Caribbean and they wanted exclusivity but were not willing to pay for it. So I continued to do media placement for other companies but not the consulting work also.

One of my favorite early companies working for was a referral called Fair Deal Sports. They were a small company but the one man show needed the help. That company ended up getting bought out because like many online gaming companies of the day they were underfunded as ownership wouldn't commit any dollars more than the original investment and couldn't absorb losses. The guys alias was Jack that ran everything. He would work from sunup to sundown. He would sleep on the couch often missing key line moves which players took advantage of. It wasn't his fault you can only expect so much from the human body and working from the first game of the day to the last game at night 7 days a week is impossible for one person. That brilliant ownership saw the problem released the guy and than hired a husband/wife team that I worked with. The husband/wife team actually worked less hours than Jack being accustomed to the Mid-West lifestyle of 9-5, 5 days a week. Luckily Legal Book Sports known today as Five Card Charlie, one of two sports books I ever deposited money with took over the customer base and honored all the debts of Fair Deal Sports which was feel good story. One company that I did not work with in the Caribbean but did meet up with the owner was Sports-Market/Aces Gold. Now that was an owner that just took the money and ran but nothing was ever made of that outside of online gaming new sites.

Good topic to have here. Thanks for it.

Welcome to EOG, Hacksaw.

I am very sorry for everyone's losses, griefs and misery with the fall of Betonsports. Life is so very much just a continuous never-ending education, Never Forgetting such a disaster as BOS. There is yet much hope in life, although None for players funds from Betonsports. I think we maintain a positive outlook and confidence about our futures.

Today, a situation may arise which will make me forget many other concerns and worries I carry now at this moment. All that any of us can do is continue with our education via living and learning as we continue to breathe. It is a new day and a new opportunity to realize that we can just move on and take the hard lesson learned along with us, Never Forgetting.

Thanks again for the sharing concerning this topic.

To everyone that has purchased the book or read a review. Due to sensitive material it was necessary to do an edit. The stories in "The Rise and Fall of BetOnSports" are based off of real life experiences unless otherwise noted. The events are based on my travels throughout the industry specifically from 2000-2002. I do make note that the book is fictional because certain charachters in the online gaming industry, identities have been changed. I can tell you all media events and relationship between the author and BOS are are accurate and documented. The book is for entertainment purposes and takes a look at the lifestyle inside the sports book and of Costa Rica at the turn of the century.

I enjoy answering questions for you and if I cannot answer questions I will let you know that it's just my opinion or educated opinion.

Hopefully the rest of the book has seen the eyes of an editor but I guess since it's just an ebook it's not that big of a deal.

Hello Shortbus, thanks for noticing the errors and since it is an ebook I have done the adjustments. This novel is one of the toughest things I have ever done. Writing the book was easy, editing was brutal. The ebook is 143 pages in length. (Equates to about 215 pages in standard 6"x9" format) Since its debut I made some changes along with detailing some stories with first hand accounts from former sports book employees.
