It's official.

We've gone from the Washington Redskins to the Washington Football Team to the Washington Commanders.

Controversy about Washington's nickname deflected attention from two painful truths about Daniel Snyder's franchise:

1) They haven't won a playoff game since 2005

and 2) Several women are suing the franchise over sexual harassment charges.

And it was a league investigation of the Washington Football Team that led to the discovery of Jon Gruden's embarrassing emails.

Daniel Snyder gets investigated and Jon Gruden gets fired.

Reminds me of the old UNLV basketball joke when Jerry Tarkanian was tired of the NCAA's meddling ways and he said, "The NCAA was so mad at Kentucky, they gave Cleveland State two more years of probation."

I personally had grown used to the Washington Football Team name, and wish they would have just stuck with that. It was a unique name in North American sports where the conventional way is to have a nickname with a team mascot. I love how European soccer teams go simply by the city name, FC Barcelona, Liverpool, Chelsea, etc.

The name they chose, Commanders and the Cleveland Guardians will take some time getting used to. Hope the Chiefs and the Braves never change their names. In the CFL, even Edmonton changed their name from the Eskimos to the Elks as Eskimos was too offensive. I wonder if the Eskimo Pie changed their name? I looked it up, and yes!

Eskimo Pie has decided on a new name three months after it acknowledged its original name was offensive toward native arctic communities. Beginning early 2021, the chocolate-covered vanilla ice cream bar will be called Edy's Pie, a nod to one of the company's founders, Joseph Edy.

People get attached to team names. Teams are named after people, animals, things of nature or climate that are strong, fast powerful. No disrespect intended. Opposite is true. Braves, Chiefs, Seminoles will be next. Pirates, Raiders, Vikings, Buccaneers are all criminals. Some people don't like 49ers, or meat Packers. We are becoming a nation of weaklings and idiots.

Vikings is anti-Scandanavian. Somebody is always going to be offended.

And those damned gold miners. I think the silver miners feel slighted.

Is Indians a derogatory term? Most people would say no. Yet, they no longer exist under that name. So really NOT that big of a difference to the PC police.

Do Vikings still exist in the world? Native Americans do and they are not going anywhere. Indians from India as well.

Please remind me where the active Viking group is these days?

the biggest issue was the mascot.

second biggest issue is that the group in question (Indians) still exist.

should we have a team called the Mexicans?

Montreal Canadiens. They are calling themselves what they are.

So the Native Americans can have a team called the Indians because they themselves are "Indians", but you cannot do that, get it?

The Sexual Predators must have been taken....

No joke, I was going to post about the Nashville Predators before HEIM's post.

that's like calling you "Honky" or "Paleface" or "Whitey".

"Redskins" is a derogatory term.

what part about this do *some* of you not understand?
you don't seem to understand the definition of "derogatory". "Whitey, Honky & Paleface"? nothing derogatory in those terms. how in the world is "whitey" a derogatory term without some ASSUMED underlying hatred behind it? its not. its just a word. Honky? same. Paleface? just a descriptor, just a nickname. how do any of those labels put a white person down? they don't. there's nothing DEROGATORY in them.

now if you said, "dirty whitey" or "scumbag honky", sure those are derogatory.

for you to see "redskins" as derogatory without any coupled descriptor, i kinda have to make assumptions about your preconceived notions and sensitivities.

what part of that do "you" not understand?

don't feign to lecture people on SJW horseshit if you're not coming from facts. there's a place for that nonsense. its called CNN.

if we did, would the mexicans be proud that a group of individuals at the height of their athletic prowess chose to represent themselves by labeling themselves "mexicans", or cry like pussies about it? i reckon that situation would work itself out quickly. at least until the liberals got mad.

that's such an interesting subject... you're posting about the american indians as indigenous peoples, and simultaneously ripping on vikings as not being indigenous to anywhere. do you not see a problem with that train of thought? you're even suggesting they don't exist anymore. and yet, they're everywhere. somehow. lol.

as a free people, we can do what we choose. you CANNOT dictate that. get it?

i mean, i know you think you can, "i'm gonna tattle on twitter!" but your kind is dying out. go cry on twitter to other twitter whiners. its getting old.

If HOMIE1975 were an NHL player, he'd be a big defenseman who likes to mix up in the corners.

Play on.

hahaha

only 6'1" 195 these days and pushing 47 yrs old so i'm just a paper tiger but it's true that racial epithets touch my nerves.

"Redskins" is a racial epithet.

Anyone who doesn't believe me, go find a Native American and ask, that is if you can find one. (That last line "if you can find one" is a George Carlin line).
