Ways to invest in the sports gambling industry?

Looking to do a little investing and thought I'd like to find some way to invest in the sporst gambling industry since I think we all believe it is going to continue to grow. Problem is, being stateside I don't have many options. I was interested in investing a bit in Neteller, but I do not know how to make any kind of investment on the London Stock Exchange.

Anyone got any reccomendations on some decent sports gambling related companies to look into?

You know this raises an interesting point...

Can a US citizen legally own stock in a company that engages in what is illegal in the US?

For example - publicly traded internet sportsbooks. By the US governments dictates online gambling is illegal. So, if a US citizen owns stock in such a company can they be prosecuted?

SOS - (Nice talking to you in Vegas) In order to buy foreign stocks you need to have an account in a brokerage that is licensed to trade on the exchange (in your example you would need to open an account with a British-based stock broker - US affiliates will not do) or buy ADR's in the company (American Depositary Receipts). ADR's are publicly traded in the US. To oversimplify - ADR's are psuedo-stock that represent a fixed number of real stock a companies native country. They allow foreign companies to tap into the US investing market without giving up their native affiliations.

Though I doubt any company with ties to offshore gambling would be permitted to offer ADR's...

Was good meeting you as well Joe -- thanks for the info.

Spoke to an investor friend of mine and he said with the % you'll lose on the currency exchange on deposit as well as withdrawal, combined with how the American dollar changes value, that I'd already be up against the wall from the get-go.

I've looked around the American stock exchange, but all I can really find are companies that deal with casinos (like slot machine companies). I'm looking more fun the companies that are sure to grow as the industry continues to grow... Turnkey sportsbook software developers, payment processors, companies that will have their price jump if we ever do have a favorable ruling on stateside gambling, etc...

I'd invest in the big brick and mortar casinos, but I think if restrictions are ever lifted on online gambling that they are more likely to take a hit due to the increase competition rather than profit.

you should have bought BYD (Boyd Gaming) about 3 years ago when it was 3.06. I'm not sure what it is now but it got up to around 50 at one point.

I made it very well known publicly (on oklahoma state message boards at the time) that BYD was getting ready to GO OFF heading up to and keying around the unveiling of the Borgata (not the specific reason, just the most publicized event). I couldn't invest in it because I was fresh out of college with a Child and going to Nursing School and working full time to pay the bills and all that, with another one on the way but I wanted everyone who could to do it.

I doubt anyone listened but I was SOOOO right. I'd been studying up on it for about 10 months every day. (kind of a hobby)

Working on another one right now, been researching it for about a year and a half and it's looking just like BYD and so far hasn't moved a bit.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, I'm just still pissed about not having the $$$ to make the $$$ at the time.

There are definately some options out there though, that with some patience should pay off handsomely, and with only a small amount of risk.

Been there, done that.... Had an extra $2k to invest my junior year in college, bought up 1000 shares of MTEX at $1.98 with plans to keep it in there for at least 5 years.

Had car trouble, ended up having to sell it at $2.03 like 6 months later to pay to have it fixed.

6 months ago it was trading at $23.50.
