Anyone just flat out not feel the financial crisis in their own lives?

Re: Anyone just flat out not feel the financial crisis in their own lives?

I am feeling it bigtime. Not able to get a job when I was looking January through June (not looking now). Credit cards maxed trying to get by, about to need to get health insurance and dreading it. Wife drives all over for her job so gas is a killer. Groceries for whole family gone way up. Upside down in my house.

I'm happy though. I have a great family, wonderful wife, getting connected in the church and with friends, seeing an end coming, and healthy for now.

Our construction company is on pace for a record year......granted we built a couple of very nice homes for some Farmers. Seems like farming is the place to be. Why cant life be fair........on top of that. I really cant say that I have been effected. I mean hell Ive lost alot of money in the market, but who hasnt? It will come back again....the ones that I a feel bad for are the ones that are about to retire after working their asses off their whole lives.

not yet, but prescription drugs are a pretty recession proof business to be in. if the state cant get a loan, though, things are going to get very interesting on October 28.

Directly not affected much at all, but mentally very much so as I feel very bad for the millions that are very much affected by it. Hate seeing bad things happen to good people.

Re: Anyone just flat out not feel the financial crisis in their own lives?

Everyone I know that wants a job has one. Those who describe themselves as "over-qualified" rather than work, sit on their ass & let my tax dollars support them. Our country is so blessed that far too many people refuse to work outside their self described profession.(Yes, the same country that punks get on here & say they're leaving if McCain gets elected,LOL) If they made 45k at their last job, they won't take a job now making 35k b/c it's "beneath" them. That is pathetic, but it's a real problem. Jobs are everywhere, too many people are just too lazy to work. oij213490

P.S. My IRA has taken a big hit, but I'm 42 years old ! I don't give a shit what it's worth now.....I want it to be there in 25 years. And it will be. The market gets too high & corrects itself. Been happening for a long time....

I like the first paragraph. In most cases your analysis is spot on. Many people are looking to hire, but the jobs go unfilled. Granted, its not a $45,000+ job, but it could lead to something else.

at the time of this posting, not effcting me at all. As a matter of fact closing on another home in three weeks. Just got the biggest raise I have received since 2002. Now that said, it could all change at any minute or hour so I feel very fortunate.

Good thread Enfuego. This thread actually had me up thinking about it last night.

Re: Anyone just flat out not feel the financial crisis in their own lives?

Well, when I was still waitressing, I noticed things slowing down. People can't afford to go out to eat anymore. However, my place of work is lucky because it's in a neighborhood that likes to keep to itself, so they have a lot of regulars.

As far as the housing market...well, I had to sell my place for dirt cheap, but I also got a great deal on the place we bought. We're talking about selling maybe $15K under what I would have gotten in a better market, but getting a hous for $30K less than we would have.

My job is pretty secure, but there could be lay offs coming through. My BF has been out of work for a few weeks now, but we're doing fine with his unemployment. He's a floor coverer with a union and companies just haven't had the money to re-do their stores.

My 401K is just fine. Since I'm so young and have no need to make fast money on it, I have it allocated into a money market account. It's not much, but I see a profit every statement.

So I guess this hasn't really directly affected me. I mean, I'm feeling the pinch, but all in all things are holding stable.

Try again. This is just a tad more than a market correction.

Re: Anyone just flat out not feel the financial crisis in their own lives?

I disagree. I was very aggressive in looking for a new job for four months before giving up. Not even a interview. I started in my field, then slowly branched out. By the fourth month, I was looking for anything. I tried to find a server job to supplement my income. Even then, I was being told that the open positions were not being filled as the restaurant customer base dropped some ungodly percentage. The state has been on a hiring freeze since February. I eventually gave up. I'm enjoying being a stay at home dad while I start a business I had been too afriad to go for. I am hoping it was a blessing in disguise.

Do you have a 401k plan or an IRA? I know people who have lost 35-50 percent of their life savings.

Count me in that club.

As of today, my 401k is down 38.5% FOR THE YEAR.

My brokerage account, with the $ I was planning to use to by a home this year, is down 67%.

I still have a decent job, and make enough to live, eat, drive, etc. But I sure as shit ain't buying $250 jeans, blowing $1k in a night at the clubs, and traveling the country like I used to.

I'm offically BARELLED IN. I'm sure Jscam will see this and laugh his ass off. See, Jman, I am honest, (unlike you) yes, I did brag when I was doing well, now I'm not but at least I am man enough to admit it.

Speaking of farming...

Buddy's dad has a +100 year old "family/generational" farm in which this year...

A pipeline (oil) will be ran through the farm's property... Dad gets $170,000 :+excited-

A wind generation company will be placing TWO wind-generators on the property...Dad gets $10,000 per-year for each generator 91023i2ndw;l

Talk about a couple unexpected "wind" falls! :cheers

Thanks Royal. The health industry seems fairly impervious to this economy, so I am hoping for good things. Not much capital to start either, so I am actually looking forward to the next year.

Yikes! I just logged onto my investment site and discovered that from 09/08 through 10/08 I am down exactly 28.93%. I knew there was a reason I was avoiding that site and looking at it.

Speaking of the health industry...

Got a buddy that runs a small bank...all is well with his institution as he didn't deal in leveraged paper or substandard lending practices...obviously there remains segments in America (economically) still doing well...i.e. much better than others.

Anyway he buys, guts and sells old small homes on contract ONLY to those in the "health-care" industry...why?

He say's in all his years at monitoring sector charts the health-care industry with regard to employment is VERY stable.

As a result, he's never had ANY problems wheeling his properties.

I just learned that the unemployment rate in Nevada is between 7 and 8 percent currently. It has not been anywhere near that level since 1985.

A new casino, the Wynn Encore received over 65,000 job applications for 5,300 openings. And the reality is, most of those 5,300 openings will be filled by someone with juice (i.e. they are related to someone already on the inside, they know the new department head, they worked for Steve Wynn in the past, etc.), so the majority of the 65,000 have zero chance.

Re: Anyone just flat out not feel the financial crisis in their own lives?

Restaurant owners that I know are saying that they're taking a beating. With the real estate crash their homes and other property may be now be upside down making it impossible for any type of equity loan. Wouldn't surprise me if some go out of business and many employees start losing jobs. Bad times for lots of people.

I do now as I got robbed yesterday. Maybe barney, harry reid and pelosi
will come bail me out. That damn economic stimulus check they
are dangling will need a couple more zeros behind it for me.

Re: Anyone just flat out not feel the financial crisis in their own lives?

i have gotten creamed in my retirement also.

anyone thinking this market "will come back" is severely delusional and doesn't have a clue what is happening with the economy.

the s&p 500 would have to double just to get back to the highs - NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
so many car dealerships, restaurants, retailers, etc are going to be closing in the next year that it will make people's heads spin.

Wynn hired a lot of extra dealers some like my friend is just transferring over. Most of the management is transferring over too.

Management is extremely loyal to Wynn. Many have moved with him through the years. One reason I guess is that Wynn is reluctant to lay people off when times are difficult. The places I have worked for -- have laid off people without a second thought.

Re: Anyone just flat out not feel the financial crisis in their own lives?

Wynn pays chump change, employee's live off tips. . . .

For many "front line" positions at the Wynn, what you say is true. That is the way Nevada works. When you consider that the average dealer has little education and would barely qualify for a minimum wage position in some other industry -- the tips they earn do compensate them very nicely. Steve Wynn built the place, he controls the capital, and those who earn tips at the Wynn would not be able to ply their trade without Steve.

What you write could also be said about other casino employers in Nevada.

When the Wynn first opened its doors, there was a period when the pit dealers were taking home more than their management (because of tips).

Since the time Steve was involved with the Golden Nugget downtown (prior to 1989) and later with his Mirage, Treasure Island, Bellagio, and Wynn properties, the labor statistics compiled by the State of Nevada consistently show that his casinos have lower labor turnover (as compared with similar competitor casinos).

But actually, I was referring to a select group of management that have stayed loyal to Steve through the years, preferring to work for him in new settings.

No, no, no I didn't. I said, in your mind which is worse? A VP candidate that attempts to get a guy fired who's physically beating her sister or a presidential candidate who has smoked refer and snorted coke?

I said absolutely nothing about either action being harmless.
