Arlington memories

Is the Pomona Fair still in operation?
the Bull Ring brings back many memories…

Fair is, racing....no.

Some fond memories too, from Pat V. walking around with his 19 year old wife to my best friend running bets for Stevens ( yes he rode there on big days).

Paco Mena stiffing a 2-5 shot almost cost a riot among horse players there…was in attendance…Mena was escorted off the track…

I remember jockey Richard Pfau at Los Alamitos.

He stiffed favored horses in the mid-1990s at Los Al.

The Longacres Mile was a premium race back in the day...I believe Boeing bought that property.

Yep, quite big in the Pacific NW, it's still run every year at Emerald Downs. I used to work at the Boeing Space Center in Kent, Longacres was right in the neighborhood in Renton. Boeing bought the property, but didn't do much with it, sold it recently.

The Arabian races. Richie Fingers had him under contract per se.

At one point, Pfau's asking price was $2,000.

The method of stiffing the favorite: Simply fall back early in the race and come with a belated run to finish out-of-the-money.

Arlington Million still one of my top 3 races. Great mix of American and foreign turfers.

Many dirt overseas phenoms disappointed but the Longchamp turfers from France where the real deal.

I had $50 win and $50 place on John Henry to win the inaugural Arlington Million.

He won by a nose over The Bart in a crazy-tight photo.

If memory serves, NBC flashed a graphic that read The Bart was the unofficial winner.

Whoops!

John Henry won all over the country back then…one of my favorite nags….

The United Nations Handicap was first run at Atlantic City Racetrack which had the best turf course in the USA….it is now being run at Monmouth….

Fort Marcy and Dr. Fager come to mind when attending the race as a young lad…during those days Atlantic City averaged around 30000 per day attendance…

Dr Fager set the world record for a mile on the dirt in 1968 at Arlington Park. It is still the world record on the dirt to this day.

In later years, Arlington Park presented the Dr. Fager Stakes.

Horse racing aficionado Jeff Gillespie, now a manager at Las Vegas Dissemination Company, was then a young chart caller at Chicago-area racetracks.

He did a double-take when he read the race conditions of the Dr. Fager Stakes.

Gillespie quickly called his friend, the witty track announcer Tom Durkin, with the discovery.

Gillespie: Tom, you will never guess the distance of this Saturday's Dr. Fager Stakes at Arlington Park?

Durkin: If Arlington scheduled the race for any distance other than a mile, they should close the track forever.

The Dr. Fager Stakes was contested at a mile-and-a-sixteenth.

Tsk tsk.

JK, yes Jeff G. has done well for himself since moving out to Vegas. He was smart to get out of the Horse racing business in Chicago. It has gone steadily downhill since he left.
You and Jeff were one of the first to make the move to Vegas from the Chicago area that i remember. Harness trainer Jeff Northrup also made the move to Vegas to bet sports around the mid eighties.

Not to mention 1 1/16 mile races at Arlington ended up being extremely unfair to horses in outer posts, as the starting gate was almost on the first turn. For many years, they never ran races at 1 1/16 miles on the main track. And when 1 1/.16 mile turf races got rained off, they would go to 1 mile on the main track.

And Jeff Northrup "practiced his head-fake" at the Stardust in the late 1980s by betting NBA totals the "wrong way" at 8:00 in the morning only to come back later in the day to bet the "right side" featuring more attractive numbers at many more outlets.

An investment of $2,000-3,000 could queer the number 4-6 points.

items being auctioned off...wish I had known sooner....only looks like 2.sessions left
The earlier auctions had a lot of cooking and kitchen appliances. The current one now has all kinds of different stuff ranging from chairs and benches to pictures, glasses, and all kinds of clothing from the gift shop.

from O'Donnell's column...is this really any kind of surpirse:

Thoroughbred racing in Chicago -- Barely breathing at Hawthorne and some informed speculation is that this season could be it for flat racing at the Stickney spa. ... Once upon a time at Arlington, early-bird horse vans would be arriving just about now to herald a new racing summer. ... Instead, only crickets and moonless memories of a grand playground lost to a green felt jungle.

It feels weird having the Arlington Million run at Churchill Downs.

no racing on Oaks or Derby Day in Chicago.....never thought I would see that in my lifetime

Only Illinois racetrack offering live horse racing on Derby Day was the old Fairmount Park in Collinsville.

The recent name change of the track in downstate Illinois highlights the demise of horse racing and the rise of sports betting in the Land of Lincoln.

"FanDuel Sportsbook and Horse Racing" is a mouthful.

Rivelli horse = no Preakness

but also:

RIVELLI AND COMPANY HAD MORE to celebrate than just the gallant run of Two Phil's.

Earlier on the card at Churchill Downs, his front-running Nobals -- also owned by the Foglia family and their Patricia's Hope LLC -- won the $500,000 Twin Spires Turf Sprint at 38-1 and paid $78.

Rivelli claimed that he had only $100 across -- win, place and show -- on the 4-year-old gelding.

Strong swirl on the Louisville-to-Chicago cash line that associates of the nine-time Arlington Park training titlist won more than $100,000 betting Nobals.

"All I can tell you is that I had $100 across," Rivelli winked. "As far as anybody else, you know some people are always going to speculate."

When is the casino coming to Hawthorne?

I can only assume the Carey family doesn't have the money to invest in the project.

That looks like never. IMHO it was never going to be successful anyway. The Carey family are horrible when it comes to business. They are too cheap and really have no clue.
Other than Chicago there is no growth left for casinos in Illinois. There has been no growth in gaming win revenue from casinos in Illinois in the last 5 years. The video machines in all the bars and store fronts took away revenue from the casinos big time.

Those pictures that Blue posted of the demolition at Arlington are pretty sad. What are you going to do. Life goes on.
