General Electric (GE) is putting $118 million to work ramping up the company?s business in Germany, building a new innovation center in the country and hiring 450 people, Bloomberg reported. GE is also undertaking a marketing campaign to curry favor with the locals, proclaiming ?We are the GE in Germany.?
The company says that having a strong base in GE allows it to sell its products more effectively throughout Europe.
GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt is the head of a new commission entrusted by President Obama with figuring out how to create jobs in the United States. As we reportedwhen he was first appointed to the role, Immelt has overseen some serious shrinkage in the American workforce at GE, but he has succeeded in adding tens of thousands of new jobs overseas. The overall workforce at GE fell by 9,000 from the year before Immelt was hired through 2010, but the workforce in the U.S. has fell by 34,000. Despite Immelt?s appearance at Obama?s recent address before Congress pushing for more jobs in the United States, it appears the old strategy isn?t going anywhere.
While it takes G and E to spell Germany, it?s easy to spell General Electric without using the letters U and S.
