The answer is because the moderate candidate GETS THE MOST VOTES IN THE PRIMARIES. Conservatives have a hard time admitting this. While the Tea Party movement has made a lot of noise, right now a flip-flopping former Gov of Massachusettes is leading in the Republican polls. There's no question that Conservatives have the passion, but also admit the moderates have the votes.
