Here's the maddening part about my lost weekend: the successful wagers, including a rare NFL bet on San Francisco -2.5 over Tampa Bay, won convincingly while several of my losing bets suffered bitter, narrow defeats.
Listed below are notes from the past few days of gambling which I hope will translate into winning wagers in the near future:
---The BCS title will go to one of four teams: Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma or Oklahoma State. The Oklahoma teams are sitting pretty as the Sooners and Cowboys figure to enter their early December meeting in Stillwater with perfect records. The Big 12 Conference will not conduct a championship game this season. The first BCS standings will be released this Sunday, October 16.
---Nine of the top 10 college football teams in the AP Poll covered the pointspread this past Saturday. Wisconsin was the only team that did not cover and the Badgers were idle.
---Wisconsin is a perfect 5-0 with eight games remaining in its season. The Badgers clearly are the class of the Big Ten. However, the Big Ten ranks far below the SEC and trails the Big 12 in the eyes of the coaches and media members casting votes in the BCS poll. The Badgers can fault their conference affiliation and blame themselves because UW last season contributed to the Big Ten's failures (0-5) in New Year's Day bowl action.
---Boise State is the team most likely to go undefeated this season, but the Broncos are competing in a Mountain West Conference (minus BYU and Utah) that rates slightly better than the Western Athletic Conference and far below any of the top four BCS conferences. The 5-0 Broncos will be a double-digit favorite in each of their remaining seven games, including a November 12th home game against a familiar foe in TCU.
---Thirteen teams remain undefeated in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision. Seven meetings of undefeated teams are possible later this season. In the ACC, Georgia Tech hosts Clemson on October 29. In the SEC, Alabama and LSU clash on November 5. In the Big Ten, three schools remain undefeated as Illinois hosts Michigan and Wisconsin on consecutive Saturdays in November (the 12th and 19th). Same holds true in the Big 12 with three undefeated squads and where upstart Kansas State travels to Norman for a showdown with Oklahoma on the final Saturday in October before the previously-mentioned OU-OSU game on December 3. The BCS Championship Game is virtually guaranteed a meeting of undefeated schools.
---Oklahoma's defense held Texas to no gain or negative yardage on 43% of its snaps in a 55-17 beatdown of the Longhorns in the annual Red River Rivalry. OU quarterback Landry Jones recorded his 17th career 300-yard passing game while the inexperienced quarterbacks of Texas -- David Ash and Case McCoy -- appeared dazed and confused. Garrett Gilbert, the Longhorns' starting quarterback at the beginning of the season, is rumored to be transferring to SMU after suffering a demotion and an injury (shoulder) during the first month of the season. College football expert Phil Steele missed the mark on the former starting quarterback when he wrote in his preseason magazine, "Gilbert is blessed with NFL measurables and I expect much improved numbers over last season's subpar season (17 interceptions)."
---Four SEC schools have accounted for the last five BCS titles: Florida after the '06 and '08 seasons, LSU in '07, Alabama in '09 and Auburn last season.
---Notre Dame committed 15 turnovers in its first four games and zero turnovers in a pair of recent romps over Purdue and Air Force.
---I'd love to quiz members of the Florida football team to ask which team is stronger, Alabama or LSU. 'Bama defeated Florida, 38-10, one week before LSU thumped the Gators, 41-11. I'll check Twitter for any enlightening tweets.
---Texas A&M will officially enter the SEC in July of 2012. The Aggies' football team is 0-7 versus the SEC since 2005. Can you say "tall cotton?"
---Study drive charts, not box scores. The garbage yardage in NCAAF should be ignored. Study the numbers when the game's outcome is on the line. Ignore the stats after winning teams quit trying and/or losing teams surrender.
---Same holds true in the NFL. I like to study YPP (yards per play) by the quarter to analyze how a game develops over time. For example, in the Baltimore Ravens' only setback this season, a 25-13 loss to Tennessee, the Ravens gained only 25 yards on their first 15 plays, a telling sign they would struggle offensively in Nashville.
---Is it possible Indianapolis is even worse than its 0-5 record would indicate? Over their first four games, the Colts' offense scored only one touchdown in 24 first-half possessions. Surprisingly, Indy in Week 5 scored three touchdowns in six meaningful first-half possessions (the Colts had a seventh possession begin with 13 seconds remaining in the first half). But the real Colts appeared after halftime and they were shutout over the final 30 minutes as the visiting Chiefs recorded the game's final 21 points to win, 28-24.
---The Dream Team is a nightmare. The Philadelphia Eagles lead the NFL in turnovers (15) and Michael Vick is the biggest culprit with seven interceptions and three fumbles lost. What a dog!
---The NFC East is home to four erratic quarterbacks. There's Vick, Eli Manning, Tony Romo and Rex Grossman. It's becoming clear the NFC East will not have a serious Super Bowl threat. Hear it now and believe it later: the NFC Championship Game will feature the last two Super Bowl MVPs, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees, in a rematch of this season's opening game.
---Carolina is 1-4 straight up and an impressive 4-1 against the spread. The Panthers have been effective in late-game settings when running no-huddle, hurry-up offensive plays out of the shotgun, a scenario in which rookie quarterback Cam Newton performed beautifully last season at Auburn.
---Green Bay leads the NFL with 21 offensive touchdowns. St. Louis ranks dead last with four offensive touchdown in four games.
---Bizarre set-up for bye weeks in the NFL this season as all 32 teams will rest one week between Weeks 5 through 9 or Week 11. All 32 teams will compete in Week 10, resulting in a bye week for the bye weeks.
MONDAY'S BEST BET......Play 430 Detroit -5.5 over Chicago. This spot screams Detroit. The undefeated Lions (4-0) will be playing their first Monday night home game since 2001. Expect a rowdy crowd to welcome the Lions to Ford Field after their hometown heroes recorded back-to-back road victories in Minneapolis and Dallas. Detroit's 23-year-old quarterback Matthew Stafford has thrown eight touchdown passes (two TDs in each of the first four games) to his favorite target Calvin Johnson, a 6'5" superstar with hands and "hops." The Lions have lost six straight games against the Bears (2-2), including a pair of narrow losses last season. Enough is enough. Here's the key angle to the game: the crowd noise at Ford Field will adversely affect Chicago's leaky offensive line in its mission to protect inconsistent quarterback Jay Cutler. Detroit welcomes rookie Nick Fairley to a deep defensive line featuring nine players all capable of pressuring the mistake-prone Cutler. Fairley, who missed the season's opening month with a foot injury, joins star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to form what will eventually be the best interior defensive line tandem in the NFL. Go Lions!
COMING FRIDAY.....A look at the first four weeks of The $10,000 EOG Invitational in which our eight contestants have combined to go a salty 31-22-2 with Doughboy's pending prediction of "over" 47.5 in tonight's Bears-Lions game rounding out the event's first 56 plays<VAR id=yiv619621823yui-ie-cursor></VAR>.

Go Lions!
