Like I told you the other day: It?s all about the O. Isn?t it always?

Grassley said he spoke with a Democratic House member last week who shared Obama?s bleak reaction during a private meeting to reports that some factions of House Democrats were lining up to stall or even take down the overhaul unless leaders made major changes.

?Let?s just lay everything on the table,? Grassley said. ?A Democrat congressman last week told me after a conversation with the president that the president had trouble in the House of Representatives, and it wasn?t going to pass if there weren?t some changes made ? and the president says, ?You?re going to destroy my presidency.??

Consider this a complete vindication of DeMint?s point, which Obama pretended to take such offense at, that if the GOP defeats ObamaCare ?it will be his Waterloo, it will break him?? Evidently The One couldn?t agree more, and with good reason. If he can?t deliver on his centerpiece policy goal with bulletproof majorities in Congress, not only will it haunt him in 2012 but he?ll have to reconsider the public?s appetite for the whole Hopenchange/Great Society agenda. Failure wouldn?t destroy his presidency so much as it would destroy his presidency as he imagined it; he?d have to remake himself as a sort of Clintonian centrist and become the ?pragmatist? all those thoughtful conservatives like David Brooks and Christopher Buckley promised us he?d be before he was sworn in and started pushing 13-digit deficits.

?On behalf of my colleagues, I respectfully ask President Obama to apologize for such a slanderous lie and ask him to stop engaging in sickening conspiracy theories to push his government-run scheme. These cheap scare tactics are beneath the dignity of the office of The President and perfectly illustrate why more and more Americans are losing faith in Barack Obama.?

Ed touched on it earlier this afternoon but things seem to have deteriorated further since then. Polite disagreement over the appropriate policy ends? Not so much:

The seven Blue Dogs on the Energy and Commerce Committee stormed out of a Friday meeting with their committee chairman, Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), saying Waxman had been negotiating in bad faith over a number of provisions Blue Dogs demanded be changed in the stalled healthcare bill.

?I?ve been lied to,? Blue Dog Coalition Co-Chairman Charlie Melancon (D-La.) said on Friday. ?We have not had legitimate negotiations?

If the two sides cannot reach an agreement, the only hope for passage of the bill in the House will be to go straight to the floor, an option leaders shied away from endorsing but said was an option.

But the Blue Dogs issued dire warnings to leaders contemplating that approach.

?Waxman simply does not have votes in committee and process should not be bypassed to bring the bill straight to floor,? Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.), the lead Blue Dog negotiator, said on Friday. ?We are trying to save this bill and trying to save this party.?

Melancon claims there are 40-45 ?hard no? votes right now; it?s unclear to what extent that number overlaps with the 40 potential no?s if the bill ends up with a provision funding abortion. Rather than blather on, though, I?ll hand you over to this enjoyable report from FNC about the ongoing meltdown. Remember, most if not all of our legislators will not even read the bill before voting and of course they will have their own plan and not be subject to this plan. This will be a travesty. Do we need to fix some things with healthcare? Absolutely.
