Reagan is the most overrated President of all time by a long shot, no?

Re: Reagan is the most overrated President of all time by a long shot, no?

the USA is NOT the USSR.

North America has BY FAR the most natural resources, it's no wonder why the United States' most valuable natural resource is the population smart enough to end up here.

Re: Reagan is the most overrated President of all time by a long shot, no?

Hard economic times were a minor reason, but the real reason was Gorbachev's moderate platform and his reforms of glasnost and perestroika

It was a people's revolutiuon.. people tired of waiting in line for bread. Gladly the government went with it instead of Stalin type stuff. Reagan did say tear down the wall and the people did.. Grain embargo did a little something too. Tough times are not to be dismissed............

There were people's revolutions in 56 and 68 too and they were put down with brutal force. Read any historiography, Gorbachev's initiation of these reforms got the ball rolling and got people to ask/demand more reforms. A nudge turned into an avalanche

I realize That Gorby and Gov had a lot to do with it but throw in failure of socialist repression for years/No grain/Military Vietnam in Afganistan/World recession/Huge challenge from US Military tech and spending. It was a give up situation. I am glad they gave up since if not it really could have been bad.. I know all about the failed populist movements in the USSR in the past so don't act like they are special when they were doomed. It was a miracle that gov was able to change but look at it now and here we go again..

Re: Reagan is the most overrated President of all time by a long shot, no?

it's kinda like 5star, not real worried are ya?

welcome to the United States of Ameri....

What does that mean? 5star?

fwiw, Yes, I am worried. I, unlike some, am cursed with something called empathy.

That's exactly the point. It was bad for years.....it took a moderate like Gorbachev to make the changes. Brezhnev, Andropov, or Chernerko would have never made the changes. Never. Gorbachev did it while having to keep an ear to the ground for possible coup attempts too

Re: Reagan is the most overrated President of all time by a long shot, no?

So if the troops killed all those at the Berlin wall and Ussr clamped down, what would we think today? Again it was people not Gorby that let it happen at least to start. Ussr army not willing to kill there own..

I don't understand your argument.

The people rebelled in 56 and 68 and both times it was put down brutally. Nothing changed after these rebellions. It was Gorbachev who allowed it. Past premiers had these protests put down brutally....Gorbachev choosing not to put it down brutally was the difference.

The earlier protests were just that.. protests with most people scared and no question of a shutdown. In the 80's with Gorby there was more and yes the gov helped let it happen but its was bigger. I'm not trying to argue. Reagan used classic economics of spending and dedt to get a good country out of recession. Russia could not handle it. Luck was involved and the Stars wars sham probably did it. Gorby gets more credit for the end of the Wall then Reagan but each are due credit. It was a great time to remember and thanks for stiring my brain..

Re: Reagan is the most overrated President of all time by a long shot, no?

it was over so fast with the guards walking away, I doubt Gorby had a say till it was over..besides saying no rash stuff to his commanders. Yes his tone set it but his tone was the only thing stopping bigger trouble inside too. good night

Re: Reagan is the most overrated President of all time by a long shot, no?

Overall, Reagan was a good President, even though he fired my ass in 1980-81...anyone remember PATCO? I moved to Vegas shortly thereafter and got involved with the gambling world...

Oh yeah, Ronny Raygun was a real peach of a guy......

The Iran-Contra affair (Persian: ماجرای مک*فارلین) was a political scandal in the United States which came to light in November 1986, during the Reagan administration, in which senior US figures agreed to facilitate the sale of arms to Iran, the subject of an arms embargo, to secure the release of hostages and to fund Nicaraguan Contras.

He basically believed in everyone has the right to do as they damm well pleased.
What about the silly war on drugs that he and Nancy escalated?

He talked a good game, but he did not reduce government, he expanded it.

Lots of great charts here:

Perhaps someone could post some of them.

Remember the last President to eliminate the Federal debt was Andrew Jackson.

Here's another good one:

I only wish Reagan actually did what he said.

This isn't even the tip of the iceberg. Go to Central America and you can still see the carnage of the Reagan years......hell go to Indiantown, FL and you can see it.

The Reagan government trained paramilitary death squads in Central American countries that rounded up and killed civvies. Only handfuls of these people were actual Communists.....the rest were poor indigenous people.

The Reagan administration knew about and fully supported the following operation, the same can be said about several other administrations too, both republican and democrat.

What is the SOA?
The School of the Americas (SOA), in 2001 renamed the ?Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation,? is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Initially established in Panama in 1946, it was kicked out of that country in 1984 under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty. Former Panamanian President, Jorge Illueca, stated that the School of the Americas was the ?biggest base for destabilization in Latin America.? The SOA, frequently dubbed the ?School of Assassins,? has left a trail of blood and suffering in every country where its graduates have returned.

Over its 59 years, the SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. These graduates have consistently used their skills to wage a war against their own people. Among those targeted by SOA graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders, and others who work for the rights of the poor. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, ?disappeared,? massacred, and forced into refugee by those trained at the School of Assassins.

Official seal of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation

The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHISC or WHINSEC), formerly the School of the Americas (SOA; Spanish: Escuela de las Am?ricas) is a United States Department of Defense facility at Fort Benning near Columbus, Georgia in the United States.
Between 1946 and 2001, the SOA trained more than 61,000 Latin American soldiers and policemen. Some of them became notorious for human rights violations, including generals Leopoldo Galtieri, Efra?n R?os Montt and Manuel Noriega, dictators such as Bolivia's Hugo Banzer, some of Augusto Pinochet's officers[1][2], and the founders of Los Zetas, a mercenary army for one of Mexico's largest drug trafficking organizations, the Gulf Cartel.[3][4] The terrorist Luis Posada Carriles was educated there in 1961, although he never graduated.[5][6][7] Critics of the school argue that the education encouraged such practices and that this continues in the WHINSEC. This is denied by the WHINSEC and its supporters who argue that the alleged connection is weak. According to the WHINSEC, the education now emphasizes democracy and human rights.

I love how people read text books written by liberals and think they have it all figured out.

So so so many completely closed minded people. The naive calling the educated naive is a favorite of mine.
