The Yankees (59-31) will try and salvage a split of their series with the Baltimore Orioles (26-66), the worst team in baseball. Last night, Jonathan Schoop singled in the winning run with 2 outs in the 9th inning off loser Delin Betances (1-3) as the Orioles edged the Yankees 6-5. Manny Machado went 3 for 4 with 2 HR and 3 RBI, and Joey Rickard went 1 for 4 with 2 RBI as Baltimore won for only the second time in their last 9 games. Greg Bird hit a 3 run HR and drove in a 4th with a sac fly, and Didi Gregorius went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Zack Britton pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his first win striking out 2 batters. NY has won 5 of its last 8, but because Boston has won 8 straight, they've extended their lead to 3.5 games in the AL East.
Baltimore sends Dylan Bundy (6-8 4.08) to the hill this evening. The 25 year old 4 year veteran was pummeled in his last outing for 5 runs on 9 hits in 3 1/3 innings pitched, a game the Orioles lost 6-2 to Minnesota, ending a personal 3 game winning streak. He faces a Yankees lineup batting just .252 overall but are third in the AL in runs scored with the most HR in the majors at 151. Aaron Judge (.281 25 60) has a 5 game hitting streak (.350) heading into tonight's action and is mired in a 3 way tie for second place in the AL with 25 HR. Giancarlo Stanton (.269 22 52) just saw a 4 game hitting streak end but after a slow start to the season is looking like the player that led the majors in HR from last season. Didi Gregorius (.261 15 48) had an incredible April but cooled considerably in the subsuquent months as evident by his decling average and lack of production. He has since bounced back nicely during the middle part of the season and and has hit safely in his last 5 games (.400). Aaron Hicks (.259 16 42) has really picked up his hitting over the last few weeks, but could be used sparingly tonight due to a hamstring injury. Gleyber Torres (.294 15 42) is battling a hip injury but could return after the All Star Break. Miguel Andujar (.279 12 39) has hit safely in 6 of his last 7 games (.304).
The pinstripers counter with Sonny Gray (5-7 5.65) who has been downright awful over his last 3 decisions all resulting in losses. Gray has allowed 15 earned over his last 11 innings pitched (12.27), including 5 runs on 6 hits over 2 innings at Toronto, resulting in a 6-2 loss. Gray faces an Orioles lineup hitting a league low .228, tied with the Mets in the majors, and averaging just 3.6 runs per contest despite 8th in the AL with 108 HR. As teams focus on the eventually departing Manny Machado (.314 23 63), the 26 year old 7 year veteran shortstop remains focused batting .400 over his last 7 games. Adam Jones (.281 10 33) could be doing a whole lot more in the way of production opportunities if the otherwise silent middle part of the lineup got on base. Trey Mancini (.220 11 24) hit just .117 throughout the first part of June before coming around again, only to tank thus far over his last 7 games in July going a paltry 1 for 17 (.059). Schoop (.227 10 24) may not be showing much to sneeze about in his day to day numbers, but has heated up and seen his average soar some 46 points sporting a 9 game hitting streak (.432). Mark Trumbo (.255 12 28) has cut down on his strikeouts this season with 61 in 212 plate appearances, however is battling a 5 for 25 (.200) stretch.
We get a bargain of a price this evening in one of the league's most hitter friendly venues in Camden Yards. Oriole Park sports short porch favorable dimensions down the corners from 318 in right field to 335 in left. At just 400 straight away in center, the ball certainly carries well during those summer nights where the former B&O Warehouse overlooks the skyline in the background. Looks like Aaron Boone even with the emergence of Tanaka last night off the DL isn't ready to hit the panic button just yet with Gray, however that could very well change if he is unable to scrap up some quality outings in the short term. Bundy has had his moments all season, but has also proven that he has a tough time battling out of early inning trouble. Tonight we look to get back on the winning track.
