An hours-long chase and standoff between Los Angeles police and an assault suspect driving a white Bentley has ended after the suspect shot himself in the head authorities said.
Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Michel Moore said the suspect is listed in grave condition and was taken to a local hospital.
Police would not release his identity until his family has been notified.
Officials said the driver was wanted for assault with a deadly weapon on his girlfriend.
Officer Karen Smith said the man led police on a low-speed chase on several Southern California freeways Monday night for more than three hours before coming to a stop on a street in Universal City near where the chase began.
About 90 minutes later television news video showed three large police trucks surround the car.
SWAT team members approached with guns pulled, broke the passenger window with a crowbar, and opened the door.
Minutes later a fire department ambulance arrived, the suspect was pulled from the car, put on a gurney and taken away.
