American Idol Season 8- Third Semifinal- March 3, 2009

It?s last call tonight at the Idol saloon as the final dozen, dare we say dirty dozen?, serve up a tall, chilled glass of mediocrity. Suffice to say it won?t be happy hour if these 12 contenders fail to raise the glass of sensational singing and serve up the same flat drafts as their predecessors. So grab your favorite beverage and strap yourself into your nearest bar stool, the only thing that can make these Idol spirits palatable is a healthy dose of liquor. (Liquor? Hardly even know her!) Bartender, gimme a double, I?m going to need something to numb this pain.

Before we begin our judges. Dawg, durr, drunk, dick. Got that out of the way.

Diva Von Smith is going to get us off to a screaming start. Barkeep, I?ll take a Bloody Mary. It will no doubt match the blood coming out of my ears after Queen Von starts his belting. Sadly he keeps it under wraps and he just comes off as a drab can of tomato juice. It needed a few dashes of Tabasco for that over the top ridiculousness that is inevitably going to rear its ugly head.

Taylor Vaifanua is this year?s mandatory Mormon. That means we are going to have to step back from the hard stuff and have a tall glass of milk (not the Sean Penn ?Milk?, Queen Von covered that). We?re going to need a bigger mug, this bitch is a freaking giant. Sasquatch the Mormon makes the fatal mistake of singing Alicia Keys. She?s so bad that I need to add some liquor to my milk. Calgon, no Drambuie, take me away!

You know those beer cans that just say ?Beer? on them. That is Alex Wagner-Trugman. Alex is to Idol what Wal-Cola is to Coke. This year?s Garret Haley decides to sing an Elton John number. Smart thinking Waldo, this show isn?t gay enough is it? Looks like generic beer is headed for the recycle bin. Somebody order me another, I need to drink to forget that debacle.

It?s true what they say, American Idol is the third leading cause of alcoholism amongst Dobermen. Time for this year?s perky cheerleader/beauty queen genre. Let?s order up one of those fruity umbrella drinks or maybe just a screwdriver (I want to drive it through my skull right now, must?not?kill). Arianna what is her name gives one of those hideous beauty pageant performances that make you fast-forward on your DVR to the swimsuit competition. I half expected her to start answering the question about maps a la Miss South Carolina.

Time to get laid back and sip a little Gin and Juice. On second thought give it to me straight. You see Ju?not Joyner is the only straight guy here in Fruity Idol land. Instead of getting a little soulful with his song choice, he picks ?Hey There, Delilah??! Are you serious, are you serious. (Insert Jim Mora ?Playoffs?? rant). Did Ju?not he sang the most boring version of an already boring song I?ve ever heard? Did Ju?not he ain?t going to win. Yeah, we know.

I come back from the bathroom and draining some of this alcohol and someone stole my drink. Pauler, is that you? Can?t leave your drink laying around with Rehab-dul in the house.

Can I get something really stupid in blonde please? Oh hey, looks its Kristen McNamara. Is there a drink called stupid blonde whore? If so, we?ll have a round. Hardcore reality fans will remember her sucking on Nashville Star. SBW provides us with the cruise ship version of Tracy Chapman. People are out of their wheelchairs and walkers for this one folks. She sucks, she?s stupid, and my alcohol blackout can?t come fast enough at this point. Dammit Pauler, hands off my drink! Get your own.

Barkeep, I hate to say this but can I get a Pink Lady? Coming right up sir, here you go. Dammit, that?s not a Pink Lady that?s Nathaniel Marshall. Yeah, yeah, same difference. My God this guy is a walking Vote for the Worst billboard. Those guys must have boners right now. Meatloaf? A little to the left right now, thanks for asking. These jokes sometimes write themselves. Rocking the Pat Benatar headband and vying to be the first male and female top vote getter simultaneously, Nate fails worse than Christopher Reeves in the 110-meter hurdles. Bar patrons if he asks you to push in his stool, just say no.

Thinking out loud here: Does anyone actually sing on this show anymore? Save the day Felicia Barton. A round of shots, let?s try a Lifesaver. Felicia is very familiar with ?No One? by Alicia Keys as he fans on the Virginia Beach boardwalk will attest. It?s far from perfect (do we expect any less from this show?), but she brings it home with a smashing finish. As we swim in the sea of Idol mediocrity, it?s nice every now and then to rise above the tide.

I?ll have a?nope, not going there. Blind guy with average voice is up. Scott McIntyre, in case you live in a cave in Afghani-freaking-stan, is sorta blind. Kinda-blind guy, kinda-sucks. Probably he is more comfortable behind his keyboard, but it comes off as a cheap glass of wine. If one was holding a NO ticket on the ?Will the winner of American Idol 8 be sight impaired?? prop right now, one would be popping the champagne right now. Bottle of Cristal to table ten please.

Carrie, er, Kendall, Underwood, er Beard is up. Gimme me something smooth and a bit bubbly. Guess that bottle of sparkly wine is going to come in handy after all. Carrie, er Pickler, er Kristy Lee, um Kendall is going country. Wait, someone actually made a strategic song selection. That?s not supposed to be the way this goes. Miss Texas Cheerleader misses on some of the high notes, but shrewd strategy may push her through. If that hillbilly Sarver guy can get voted through then Carrie/Kellie/Kristie/Kendall has a chance.

Rum and cokes for the guys, mojitos for the girls. Jor-Gay is representing for all the Puerto Ricans. The really gay Puerto Ricans, that is. Seriously a gay Puerto Rican singing ?Don?t let your son go down on me?? I can?t compete with the unintentional subtle humor that these alternative lifestylers are bringing. Bringing fiercely I might add with a circle snap, girlfriend. Good song choice, good performance. (Pauler stole my drink when I was in the bathroom didn?t she? WTF is she saying?). After that performance, Jor-Gay should be really happy. Really, really happy and gay.

Remember that Naked Gun movie where Leslie Nielsen orders a Black Russian? Then the bartender just shakes his head no. I?m not going to lie and tell you that Lil Rounds is Russian. The judges are going to slobber all over this like Doberman on vodka. Don?t let the smoke and mirrors, or the 16 shots we?ve imbibed in, fool you folks. Three words: LaToya London lite.

Finally this nightmare is over. I could sure use a drink right about now. Dammit, who took my drink? Pauler?Pauler???

Week 3 of the Top 36 of American Idol 2009:



  1. Von Smith ? Mr. Smith sings ?All I Need To Get By? - but it won't be enough to get through. Good performance, especially the second half of it, but it was too old for this crowd. He sang it pretty well but the kiss of death here is going first. You have to crush it to open a two-hour show and be remembered, and he didn't.
  2. Taylor Vaifanua ? Who? Load cannon, shoot fodder. Repeat. Even Simon forgets her ? in the same night!!!
  3. Alex Wagner-Trugman ? The closest thing to a law firm on American Idol this season gets to Joe Cocker-y and goes way over the top. Like 10 beers on Open Mic night, it is WAY Karaoke here. No way he gets through.
  4. Ariianna Afsar ? Wow, so ?Cute as a button? is a bad thing? Really? She looks 16 and sings a song older than her by about a decade at least. Abba? ABBA? Great call there ? remember that one when you watch the Top 12 from home.
  5. Ju'not Joyner ? The guy from Maryland can sing! On a very weak male singer night, I think he's the one who goes through tonight. That was a nice performance of a current song with a good twist. Most of all, memorable in a forgettable group so far ? too bad he gets stepped on by the rest of the show. If he goes near the end he might have gotten the wildcard, but not stuck in the middle here.
  6. Kristen McNamara ? Good looking blonde who can sing. That's a good shot right there. Too bad she gets trumped later in the show by Kendall Beard. She had the better voice but again, stuck in the middle. She sounded good but it wasn't memorable. Tough spot to overcome.
  7. Nathaniel Marshall ? Meatloaf. Yes, Meatloaf. ?I would do anything for love, but I won't do that....? :eek: :eek: :LMAO:LMAO OMG are you serious? See you off off off off Broadway ? perhaps Trenton.
  8. Felicia Barton ? Contestant #37 steps up for yet another ?Alicia Keys? song. Apparently that was the lone song book in the women's dressing room? Good voice but not much of a different (or memorable) performance. Despite the push from the judges (what's up with that this season?) ?No one, no one? is gonna put you through to the Top 12. Bye bye.
  9. Scott MacIntyre ? One of the best moments from the earlier part of the season :hifive: isn't shown in the cameo ? pity. Bruce Hornsby's Mandolin Rain sounded pretty good ? and the heartstrings for his disability were plucked just enough. Will he get through? Just listening to him (how ironic that you have to ignore a singer's blindness to judge him fairly?) and he was good ? but not great. However, this is ?American Idol? - where the best stories, I mean singers, no ? stories ? get through. Top 12 for Scott.
  10. Kendall Beard ? Blonde.- check. Cute ? check. Country flavor ? check. Voice? Nah. Three out of four aren't bad, right? She sounded okay in parts but there were some ?oof? and ?ouch? moments too. Isn't it great when the judges talk fashion and personality? That's always, always a good sign of a great vocal performance. Do they have Karaoke at Lone Star?
  11. Jorge Nunez ? Ah, the benefits of being the last guy ? both of them have made it, would Jorge continue that streak? So what's the song ? oh, I see ? another Elton John song. That must have been included in the Alicia Keys book order ? a short of ?his and hers? order (or ?hers and hers??). Well, after all that ? he actually did sound pretty good. Not my choice for a Top 3, but I doubt I'm representative of his audience. He should have a strong Latino voting bloc (even throwing out the emotional Spanish after his performance), he sang it pretty well (and PAULA STOOD UP!!!!!) plus he went last. All that will likely get him close to the Top 3 for the night.
  12. Lil Rounds ? Closing the show with the closest thing to a lock of all twelve performers is Ms. Rounds. Mary J. Blige in her wheelhouse, getting the crowd into it and closing her song and the show in a strong effort. ?Call this show if you can't be without me? worked into the lyric too, :LOL:. Oh yeah, a ?Brilliant? from the British judge. Top 12 as a lock.


My picks for Top 3: Lil Rounds (female), Scott MacIntyre (male), and a fight between Felicia, Jorge, JuNot and Kendall for the wildcard. I will pick Jorge Nunez as the third but the other three should be back for the wildcard show.

Too bad the button picked a horrible song, she had promise, if she would have picked the right song she would have advanced easily.

Felicia looked hot.....she had a little Halle Berry look there with some Rashida Jones mixed in. Liked her, wouldn't mind seeing her again.

I need to know what went wrong to prevent betting on unknown contestants that got no air time in the future. Also, do your usual, get a new horse, this one is as dead as the day you said to invest in it.

Going to do a little work and post some odds for the wild card show tomorrow. Doubt any books will put up odds on it, since it is fixed (in the sense the producers will pick the three instead of a vote). Likely they already have a good idea who they want.

One thing to note is that there are 6 male finalists and 3 female finalists. Now it does not have to be even gender numbers (not that we can tell with the rampant gayness of the show), but it would be pretty shocking to be 3-0 males tomorrow and highly unlikely 2-1 males. Most likely we will see 2 females and 1 male and even possibly all 3 females. Bear that in mind.

Being that Simon is the boss of the judges, his fav Megan is a for sure to advance, and if a book offered -150 i would make it my lock of the year :pop:

If a guy goes, which is probable, Anoop is clearly the one with Matt being the only real contender with a shot.

Now if producers want rating Tatianna goes through, if they want talent its either Jesse or Nasally aka Genesis

FWIW i think Felicia at the very least deserved a spot in wildcard, so either Tatianna shouldnt have made it or make it 9
