Party of four at Piero's in Las Vegas.

Sports betting veteran Mike Corrigan is hosting the small group.

I'm at the table with a fellow gambler while Mike is chatting tableside with the owner of the classy restaurant.

We are waiting for the fourth member of our party.

Suddenly, a tall guy with a dark complexion dressed in a t-shirt and blue jeans comes strolling toward our table.

His wild head of hair looks as if it hasn't seen a comb in months.

He's looking down at his phone, distracted and out-of-place.

The restaurant owner says to Corrigan, "I'll be right back...Let me get this bum out of here."

To which Corrigan declares, "Wait! That's Dink. He's the fourth member of our party."

And I always enjoyed the interactions between the doctor-types and the local desperados.

Made for some fun times.

Of course, those interactions took place at a time when you had to be present in the sports book to make a wager.

There's a correlation with stress and your immune system's ability to ward off cancer cells.

Is there anything more stressful than gambling every day?

I forgot the name of the popular radio guy JK knew who said he'd dive into
the couch for fumbles when watching a game with a 100 bucks riding.

Every wager is like that.

Popular radio guy, died in his early 70s.

Great observation Heim, stress affects the immune system in a lot of ways related to one's health, and being a gambler is about as stessful as it gets

It's unfair to tell the story about Dink's appearance at Piero's without fessing up to my most embarrassing wardrobe story.

Think early-to-mid 2000s.

Joe Lupo is the Director of Race and Sports Book Operations at the Stardust and Bob Scucci is his right-hand man.

I served as the host of a radio show airing from an in-house booth located at the back of the room.

One day, Lupo summons me to the counter where he and Scucci tell me about a television interview scheduled the next day with "The Travel Channel."

Producers at "The Travel Channel" are interested in interviewing the three of us.

By this time, Lupo and Scucci were on the fast track to success with Boyd Gaming.

They loved their jobs and had a lot of fun behind the counter.

On this day, I would be the target of their caustic humor.

After Lupo instructed me to arrive at noon for the television interview, he then said, "And Kelly, do me a favor. Wear one of your nicest t-shirts."

Before I could register the insult, Scucci was doubled-over in laughter.

Dressed impeccably in suits and ties, Lupo and Scucci could not stop laughing.

Later that day, I headed for the mall to buy a sportcoat, cursing Lupo and Scucci the entire way.

UPDATE: Twenty years later, Joe Lupo is the President of Hard Rock Atlantic City, Bob Scucci is the Vice President of Race and Sports Book Operations for Boyd Gaming and John Kelly is serving as an online arbiter in settling disputes between Kane and Railbird.

Good night, everybody.

I used to drive myself crazy being glued to a screen ( for racing) from morning till night afraid that I would miss something.
A bad beat would eat at me for days ( horses not sports)

I turned the stress machine off. I care about my bets but I don't. ( eapecially true with sports except NCAFF)
I'm done with a bad beat after a few minutes.

It does leave me prone to losing focus and being lackadaisical at times though.

I think I made a good decision.

I was so bad I would skip going out with family so I could monitor the Central Michigan/Akron CFB game because I had money riding on it. I realized how asinine that was and started living life again - way before all I went thru in 2019. Now, once I make a play on a game I rarely pay any attention to it at all. I have no control over anything so why let it bother me. YES - I can do "live betting" but I prefer to make the play then do something else and worry about the result later on.

Who is responsible for turning the focus of this thread from dinky fighting for his life in a hospice to badbeats? Uncouth for sure.

A lot of candidates but let's go with Kinky since he already is a disliked EOG contributor. Keep your shitty $5 bets to yourself, Kinky.

And dinky took it to another level. He never went anywhere without his sports beeper and he would sweat the scores every 3 minutes no matter where he was. Not only would he sweat them but he would pimp the beeper like a poker player pimps his cards jsut barely getting a peak at the corner of the number to see if the score had changed.

Even if your gaming lacks stress, it likely lacks sleep

100% agree.

Recently I made a change, deciding to go to bed earlier and taking a Melatonin. According to the Fitbit, I'm getting about 90 more minutes of sleep a night. And the late night games? Sometimes we wake up to a pleasant surprise. I was on Seattle last night and with them down 5-1 getting late, just assumed it was a loss. I was surprised to see this morning the L had turned to a W.

The West Coast does get to see the late games without altering their life much. But they also likely attack the betting lines late the next morning. About the only advantage of being a bettor in the Eastern time zone.
